Zamalek Sporting Club, often called Zamalek, is a famous sports club from Giza, Egypt. It's best known for its amazing men's football team. This team plays in the Egyptian Premier League, which is the top football league in Egypt. Zamalek is known for winning many titles in Egypt and across Africa. They often compete in big tournaments held by the CAF.
The club started on January 5, 1911, as Qasr El Nile Club. Since the beginning, their home uniform has been white. A few years later, in 1913, the club changed its name to Cairo International Sports Club. People often called it El Mokhtalat Club. In 1941, King Farouk I gave the club a special honor, and it was officially named Farouk El Awal Club. However, the name Zamalek was already popular. After the 1952 Egyptian Revolution, the club officially became Zamalek Sporting Club.
Zamalek quickly became one of the top two football teams in Egypt in the 1920s. They were the first Egyptian team to win a title! They won the Sultan Hussein Cup in 1921 and 1922. They also won the first Egypt Cup in 1922 and the first Cairo League in 1922–23. In Egypt, Zamalek has won a total of 65 trophies. This includes 14 Egyptian Premier League titles and 28 Egypt Cup titles. They are one of only two clubs that have played in every season of the Egyptian Premier League.
On the international stage, Zamalek was the most successful African football club in the 20th century. They won 9 titles, more than any other team. They have won the CAF Champions League five times and the CAF Confederation Cup twice. They also have five CAF Super Cup titles and one African Cup Winners' Cup title. Zamalek was the first Egyptian team to win the CAF Super Cup in 1994. They are also known as the "Club of the Afro-Asian Century" because they won the Afro-Asian Club Championship twice. Zamalek was also the first Egyptian team to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup in 2000, even though the tournament was later canceled.

Club History
Early Days: Starting the Club (1911–1915)
Not much is known about the very first years of Zamalek. Historians say a Belgian lawyer named George Merzbach started the club. On December 25, 1910, he saw a guest house by the Nile River that he thought would be perfect for a sports club. Merzbach wanted to create a new club for everyone: Belgians, Egyptians, and other foreigners.
At that time, the main sports club in Cairo, Gezira Sporting Club, was only for the British Army. Merzbach had good connections with Khedive Abbas II and other important people. This made it easy for him to start the new club. He named it Qasr El Nile, which means "The Nile Palace."
The club officially opened on February 6, 1911. The first leaders included Merzbach as president and famous British archaeologist Howard Carter as vice president. This club was special because it welcomed everyone, no matter their background. Merzbach led the club through World War I.
In 1913, the club moved and changed its name to Cairo International Sports Club (C.I.S.C.). People often called it El Mokhtalat Club. The second president was Nicolas Arfagi Bianchi, who also played football for the team.
Becoming an Egyptian Club and Early Wins (1915–1941)
In 1915, Ibrahim Allam "Juhainah" joined the club with his football team. Zamalek became the first Egyptian team to play against foreign teams. In 1916, they beat the Scottish Horse team 1–0.
In 1917, Zamalek was the first Egyptian football club to play in the Sultan Hussein Cup. This was the first official football competition in Egypt. Zamalek played very well and reached the final. Many other Egyptian clubs wanted to join after seeing how serious and important this competition was. Famous players from Zamalek in the 1910s included Tewfik Abdullah and Hussein Hegazi.
Ibrahim Allam and the Egyptian members started a movement in 1917 to make the club more Egyptian. They wanted to remove foreign members from the club's leadership. After some disagreements, the Egyptian members called for a special meeting.
At this meeting, they decided to elect a new Egyptian board of directors. Mohammad Badr became the first Egyptian president of Zamalek. In 1921, Zamalek won the Sultan Hussein Cup. They beat Britain's Sherwood Foresters 2–1 in the final. This made them the first Egyptian team to ever win a title!
In 1922, Zamalek won the first Egypt Cup. Two weeks later, they won the Sultan Hussein Cup again. They also won the first Cairo League title in 1922–23. This team had many talented players like Hussein Hegazi and Ali Riadh. They won many titles in the 1920s. On January 5, 1923, Zamalek beat Al Ahly 5–0 in a friendly match. Sadek Fahmy scored three goals, which is called a hat-trick.
In 1923, Lieutenant General Mohammed Haidar Pasha became the new president. He was the longest-serving president in Zamalek's history, leading the club for almost 30 years. Haider Pasha was also the Minister of War and the Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Army. He also led the Egyptian Football Association. He worked hard to protect Zamalek's rights and keep its headquarters by the Nile River.
Around 1924, Zamalek earned the nickname "Qahir-al-Aganib," meaning "the conqueror of foreigners." This was because they often beat famous foreign teams in friendly and official matches. This made the club and football very popular in Egypt. In 1925, Zamalek won the King Fouad Cup for the first time.
In 1925, Zamalek continued to beat foreign teams. They won all four friendly matches against English clubs. In 1928, Hussein Hegazi looked for new players from schools to join Zamalek. He played against Al Ahly with these students and won. This was when the nickname "school of play, art, and engineering" started to be linked with Zamalek.
When the club's new headquarters opened on October 7, 1928, Zamalek beat the English Army Club 1–0. They also had a huge 14–0 win against another British team on October 23, 1928. Only three Zamalek players scored all 14 goals! This showed they truly were "Qahir-al-Aganib."
Zamalek won the Cairo League two times in a row in 1928–29 and 1929–30. Players like Mohamed Latif and Hussein Hegazi helped them win. In 1929, Zamalek also beat the Hungarian national team 2–1 in a friendly game. Mostafa Taha became a new star player in the 1929–30 season. He scored his first goal in the Cairo derby. Taha scored over 100 goals for Zamalek and is their all-time top scorer in the Cairo derby with 12 goals. He retired as Zamalek's captain in 1945.
In the 1930s, Zamalek won more titles. They won the 1931–32 Egypt Cup by beating Al Ahly 2–1. After Hussein Hegazi retired, players like Ali El-Hassani, Abdulrahman Fawzi, and Mohamed Latif helped the team. They won the Cairo League twice and the King Fouad Cup in 1934.
In the 1934–35 Egypt Cup, Zamalek won the cup by beating Al Ahly 3–0 in the final. On December 2, 1938, Hussein Labib scored the winning goal for Zamalek against Al Ahly in the 1938 Egypt Cup final rematch. In the 1939–40 Cairo League, Zamalek beat Al Ahly 4–3 in the last match. Zamalek won the league title for the sixth time.
Ruling Egyptian Football (1941–1952)
Zamalek started the 1940s by winning almost all major football tournaments in Egypt. The club was growing as a sports, social, and educational place. They won the Cairo League in 1939–40 and 1940–41, and the King Fouad Cup in 1940. With Mohamed Latif still playing and Tewfik Abdullah as head coach, the team was very strong.
In the 1940–41 league season, Zamalek had amazing results. They won eight out of ten matches, scoring five or more goals in five games. They scored 37 goals and only let in 9. Al Ahly needed to win by eight goals against Zamalek in the final match to win the title, but they withdrew. Zamalek celebrated their title with a friendly match instead.

In 1941, King Farouk I, who was a big fan of Zamalek, became the club's honorary president. The club's name was changed to Nady Farouk El Awal (Farouk I Club). In 1944, Haider Pasha convinced King Farouk to watch the Egypt Cup final. Zamalek beat Al Ahly 6–0 in that match. This was the biggest win in the history of the Cairo derby and has not been broken since.
Many new talented players emerged in Egypt during this time, mostly from Zamalek. These included Yehia Emam, Hanafy Bastan, and Omar Shendi. Zamalek won the Cairo League five times in the 1940s. The club's strong leadership helped them win many titles.
Abdel-Karim Sakr moved from Al Ahly to Zamalek in 1939. He played for Zamalek for 14 seasons and scored over 100 goals. He helped the team win many titles in the 1940s and score big wins in the Cairo derby. Sakr is the only player who scored in both 6–0 wins against Al Ahly.
In 1948, the new Egyptian League started. Zamalek played against Al Masry in the first match on October 22, winning 5–1. Mohamed Amin scored the first goal in the league's history for Zamalek. Saad Rustom scored the first hat-trick.
Zamalek won the Cairo League for three years in a row from 1950–51 to 1952–53. In the 1952 Egypt Cup final, Zamalek beat Al Ahly 2–0 to win their 8th title.
After the Revolution (1952–1960)
After the 1952 Egyptian revolution, the club's name officially changed to Zamalek on August 18, 1952. The club moved to a new location and started offering 24 different sports. Mahmoud Shawky became the new president. In 1956, businessman Abdel-Latif Abu-Rajelha became the club president.
Essam Baheeg was one of Zamalek's most important players in the 1950s. He joined the youth team in 1949 when he was 18. He quickly became a key player for the first team and the Egypt national football team. Baheeg was very loyal to Zamalek and played his whole 12-year career with them. He helped Egypt win the Africa Cup of Nations in 1959, scoring two winning goals in the final. After retiring, he coached Zamalek and won four titles in one season.
This time saw new loyal players emerge, like Alaa El-Hamouly and Sharif El-Far. Alaa El-Hamouly won seven Egypt Cup titles with Zamalek. He is Zamalek's all-time top scorer in the Egypt Cup with 23 goals. He is also the second all-time top scorer in the Cairo derby with 9 goals.
In 1959, Zamalek bought Ali Mohsen, a striker from Yemen. He was the first non-Egyptian to be the top scorer in the league in the 1960–61 season. Zamalek won the Egypt Cup six times from 1952 to 1960. They also won the Cairo League for three years in a row.
Continued Success (1960–1984)
In the 1960s, a new group of talented players joined Zamalek, including Ahmed Rifaat and Hamada Emam. This period saw more competition between Zamalek and Al Ahly. In 1961, Zamalek invited Real Madrid to play a match in Cairo.

In 1966, Zamalek invited West Ham United F.C., who were European champions, to play in Cairo. Zamalek played an amazing match and beat them 5–1! Hamada Emam scored three goals. This was a huge win because West Ham had many stars from the England national football team.
After the Six-Day War in 1967, Zamalek welcomed other clubs like Ismaily SC and Al Masry SC to use their grounds. Mohammed Hassan Helmy became president in 1967. He was the first Egyptian sportsman to become a club president. He led Zamalek for many years and helped build most of the club's facilities. He was known for working for free, refusing any pay.
The 1970s Zamalek team was one of the best. It had legendary players like Taha Basry, Hassan Shehata, Ali Khalil, and Farouk Gaafar.
In the 1975 Egypt Cup final, Zamalek beat Ghazl El Mahalla 1–0, with Hassan Shehata scoring the winning goal. Shehata and his teammates also won the 1977–78 Egyptian Premier League title. Hassan Shehata is considered one of the greatest Egyptian footballers. He was called the "Master" for his amazing skills. He was the top scorer in the Egyptian League twice. After retiring, he coached the Egypt national team to win three African Cup of Nations titles in a row.
Zamalek was still known as "Qahir-al-Aganib." On December 21, 1977, they played a friendly match against Bayern Munich at the Cairo International Stadium. Zamalek won 3–2!
Ali Khalil was another star player from the 1970s. He played his whole career with Zamalek and scored 94 goals in 9 seasons. He was one of Egypt's most popular players. In the 1976–77 Egypt Cup, Zamalek won the final 3–1 against Ismaily. Khalil scored two goals and was the cup's top scorer. He was nicknamed "Dangerous Ali." Khalil was also known for his honesty. In a match against Ismaily, he told the referee that his goal was not valid because the ball went through a torn net. The goal was canceled, even though it was important for Zamalek to win the league title.
Farouk Gaafar, nicknamed the "King of Midfield," was another talented player. He started his youth career at Zamalek and played his whole career there. He was the first captain to lift the African Cup of Champions Clubs trophy in 1984.
Zamalek won the Egypt Cup two more times in the 1970s. They also won the Egyptian Premier League in 1963–64, 1964–65, 1977–78, and 1983–84. They won the October League Cup in 1974, which was held when the main league was canceled due to the Yom Kippur War.
African Triumphs (1984–2005)

Zamalek won its first African title in 1984. They beat Nigeria's Shooting Stars S.C. in the 1984 African Cup of Champions Clubs final. In 1986, Zamalek won their second 1986 African Cup of Champions Clubs title. In 1987, they won the Afro-Asian Club Championship against Japan's Furukawa Electric. This was the first time an Egyptian club won this championship.
In the 1987–88 Egyptian Premier League season, Zamalek won the league title with Essam Baheeg as coach. Gamal Abdel-Hamid was the top scorer that season. He scored over 90 goals for Zamalek and was Egypt's captain in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He is considered one of the best forwards in African football history.
In 1993, Zamalek won the 1993 African Cup of Champions Clubs final by beating Ghana's Asante Kotoko. Then, in 1994, they won the 1994 CAF Super Cup. This was special because it was the first time two Egyptian teams played in the final. Zamalek beat Al Ahly in this important match, known as the "African Game of the 20th Century."
In 1996, Zamalek won their fourth CAF Champions League title. They followed this with the 1997 CAF Super Cup. In the same year, Zamalek won the 1997 Afro-Asian Club Championship again, becoming the only team to win it twice.
Kamal Darwish was the president of Zamalek from 1996 to 2005. During his time, Zamalek won 16 football titles. Overall, the club achieved 1186 championships in 24 different sports under his leadership. In 2000, Zamalek played a friendly match against the Palestine national football team in Gaza.
Zamalek was named the best club in the world by the IFFHS in February 2003. They were also the first Egyptian team to qualify for the 2001 FIFA Club World Cup, though it was canceled. Zamalek won the CAF Champions League in 2002, the 2003 CAF Super Cup, and the first two Egyptian Super Cup titles in 2001 and 2002.
Zamalek is the only team to win seven championships between the 2002–03 and 2003–04 seasons. This was more than FC Barcelona, who won six titles in one year. Zamalek also won the Egyptian Premier League three times during this period. Hazem Emam was a key player for this generation, winning 14 titles with Zamalek. He was nicknamed the "imam of the talented players."
Challenges and Comeback (2005–Present)
From 2005 to 2013, Zamalek faced many changes in its leadership. This made it hard for the football team to win titles. They only won the Egypt Cup twice during this time.

Shikabala, a talented winger, became a symbol for Zamalek during this difficult period. He helped keep the club's popularity strong. The club's performance and leadership were unstable for several years.
In 2014, Mortada Mansour became president. Zamalek won the 2013–14 Egypt Cup that year. In the 2014–15 season, Zamalek won the Egyptian Premier League and set a record for the most points. They also won the 2014–15 Egypt Cup by beating Al Ahly in the final. In 2016, Zamalek reached the CAF Champions League final and won the 2015–16 Egypt Cup again against Al Ahly. They also won the Egypt Super Cup. In 2018, they won the 2017–18 Egypt Cup.
In 2019, Zamalek won the CAF Confederation Cup, the 2018–19 Egypt Cup, the Saudi-Egyptian Super Cup, the 2020 Egyptian Super Cup, and the 2020 CAF Super Cup. Since 2014, the football team won 11 championships.
In November 2020, the Ministry of Youth and Sports suspended Zamalek's board due to financial issues. New temporary leaders were appointed. In the 2020–21 season, the football team won the Egyptian Premier League after six years. They also won the Egypt Cup, even with the club facing tough times.
On November 22, 2021, Mortada Mansour and his board returned to lead Zamalek. In the 2021–22 season, the football team won the Egyptian League for the second year in a row and the Egypt Cup. This happened even though FIFA had banned them from registering new players.
Zizo is one of Zamalek's best players. He has won many titles and has been very consistent for the club. In August 2023, the board resigned because they couldn't solve the club's problems and debts. This led to a ban on registering players and difficulties winning games.
Hussein Labib's Leadership (Since 2023)
On October 21, 2023, Hussein Labib and his team won the Zamalek Club elections by a large number of votes. This started a new chapter for the club.
Zamalek SC defeated RS Berkane to win the 2023–24 CAF Confederation Cup title for the second time. This brought their total continental titles to 14. Zamalek also won the 2024 CAF Super Cup, their fifth Super Cup title. They beat Al Ahly 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. This match is known as the "African Super of the 21st Century."

They usually play twice a season in the Egyptian Premier League, and sometimes in the Egypt Cup final or the CAF Champions League.
Mit Okba Derby
The Mit Okba derby is a football match between Zamalek and Tersana SC. Both teams are from the Mit Okba area in Giza. This derby was very important in the Egyptian Premier League in the 1960s and 1970s. However, it became less important as Tersana SC's performance declined.
Club Finances
In 2018, Presentation Sports increased its sponsorship contract with Zamalek from 100 million Egyptian pounds to 120 million annually. The new team uniform cost 9 million Egyptian pounds.
The National Bank of Egypt signed a deal to rent three stores at the club for 25 years. Zamalek also signed a deal with Banque Misr, getting 10 million pounds. In return, Banque Misr can use two walls of the club for advertising for 20 years.
A report showed that the club's budget had a surplus of 170 million Egyptian pounds in 2018–2019. The club also signed agreements with the Ministry of Military Production (Egypt) for construction and sports development. They also signed a deal with "I-Friends Sports" to open a club branch in the United Arab Emirates.
