Race Rules Explained
Yellow Jersey
The Yellow Jersey is for the overall leader of the race. This is the rider who has completed all the stages in the shortest total time. If two riders have the exact same time, the race officials look at their exact times from individual time trials to decide who gets the jersey.
Green Jersey (Points Classification)
The Green Jersey is for the best sprinter. Riders earn points by finishing stages quickly, especially flat stages, and by winning special "intermediate sprints" during a stage.
- Finishing a flat stage: More points for the top finishers.
- Finishing a medium mountain stage: Fewer points than flat stages.
- Finishing a mountain stage: Even fewer points.
- Individual time trials: Points for the top 10 finishers.
- Intermediate sprints: Points for the first 3 riders.
Polka Dot Jersey (Mountain Classification)
The Polka Dot Jersey is for the "King of the Mountains." Riders earn points by being the first to reach the top of designated climbs. The harder the climb, the more points they get.
- Hardest climbs (off-categorized): Most points for the first 10 riders.
- Category 1 climbs: Points for the top 8 riders.
- Category 2 climbs: Points for the top 6 riders.
- Category 3 climbs: Points for the top 4 riders.
- Category 4 climbs: Points for the top 3 riders.
If a climb is the last big mountain of a stage, the points for the hardest climbs are doubled!
White Jersey (Best Young Rider Classification)
The White Jersey is for the best young rider in the overall standings. To be eligible, riders must be born in 1985 or later for this Tour. The young rider with the lowest total time wears this jersey.
Team Classification
The Team Classification is for the best team. To figure this out, the times of the top three riders from each team are added together for every stage. The team with the lowest total time at the end of the Tour wins this award.
Combativity Award
This award is given to the rider who shows the most effort and sportsmanship during a stage. It's for the rider who tries the hardest or makes the race exciting. At the end of the Tour, a "Super Competitor" is chosen from all the daily winners.
