History of Flowery Branch

How Flowery Branch Began

Flowery Branch was officially started in 1874. This happened one year after the Richmond and Danville Air-Line Railroad built a train track through the area. This new railway connected the cities of Charlotte and Atlanta. Today, you can visit the Historic Caboose exhibit and the Historic Train Depot museum in the city.

What's in a Name?

The original name for Flowery Branch was Anaguluskee. This is a Cherokee Indian word that means "flowers on the branch." Some people also remember the name Nattagasska, which means "Blossom Creek." This was another nickname for the town for a long time.

Famous Visitors and Old Roads

In 1818, Andrew Jackson traveled through Flowery Branch. He was on his way to the First Seminole War. The historic Bowman-Pirkle House, built that same year, was once located near Flowery Branch and Buford.

Part of the old Old Federal Road runs through Flowery Branch. This road was very important for travel through northern Georgia in the early to mid-1800s.
