List of English by-elections (1701–1707) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This page lists special elections, called by-elections, that happened in England between 1701 and 1707. These elections were held when a Member of Parliament (MP) left their job before the next big general election. The list shows who was the MP before and who won the special election.

It's hard to know exactly which political groups or "parties" people belonged to back then, because these groups were always changing. So, this list doesn't try to define their political teams.

Understanding the Dates

In this time, the legal year in England started on March 25th. But for this list, we're using January 1st as the start of the year, just like we do today.

How to Read the By-Elections List

The column labeled "c/u" tells you if the by-election was:

  • c (contested): This means more than one person ran for the job, and people had to vote.
  • u (unopposed): This means only one person ran, so they automatically won without a vote.

If you see an asterisk (*) after the 'c' or 'u' (like c* or u*), it means the winner was chosen again in the next big general election, or in any other special elections that happened after this one. If they were only chosen again in the next general election but not in any special elections in between, there's no asterisk.
