Lists of ethnic minority politicians in the United Kingdom facts for kids
This article is about people from non-European ethnic minority backgrounds who have been elected to important political roles in the United Kingdom. These roles include being a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, a Member of the House of Lords, or a member of other important assemblies like the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Senedd, and London Assembly.
Back in 2001, a study looked into how many people from ethnic minorities were involved in British politics. It explored why there might be fewer ethnic minority representatives in the House of Commons.
The very first Member of Parliament from an ethnic minority was elected way back in 1767! His name was James Townsend, and he had some African family background. He later became the first Black Mayor of London in 1772. It's important to know that in those days, Jewish people were usually seen as a religious group, not an ethnic minority. The first Jewish person to become an MP was Lionel de Rothschild in 1847. He had to wait until the rules changed so he could take his oath without swearing on a Christian Bible.
Over the years, the number of ethnic minority MPs has grown. In 2001, there were 12 such MPs. This number increased to 15 in 2005, and then jumped to 26 in 2010. By 2010, the UK also saw its first three Muslim women elected as MPs. After the 2015 election, 41 MPs were from ethnic minority backgrounds, and this number rose to 52 in 2017. In the 2019 election, there were 66 non-white MPs.
The House of Lords, which is the UK's second chamber of Parliament, also has members from ethnic minority backgrounds. In 2022, there were about 55 ethnic minority members in the House of Lords.
