List of hills in the Peak District facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Peak District in England is famous for its beautiful hills and mountains. This article lists some of the most important hills you can find there. Most of these hills are inside the Peak District National Park, which is a special area protected for its nature and beauty. Some are just outside its borders.

The hills are listed by how high they are from sea level (this is called their absolute height). Then, if two hills have the same absolute height, they are sorted by how much they rise above the land around them (this is called their relative height). Some special hills called Marilyns are marked in bold. A Marilyn is a hill that rises at least 150 meters (about 492 feet) above the surrounding land.

The Peak District also has two real mountains: Kinder Scout and Bleaklow. To be a mountain, a peak needs to be over 600 meters (about 1,968 feet) high and rise more than 30 meters (about 98 feet) above the land around it. Kinder Scout definitely fits this! Bleaklow is also very high, but some people debate if it rises quite enough to be called a mountain by that second rule.

Exploring Peak District Hills

The Peak District is a fantastic place for outdoor adventures. You can hike, explore, and enjoy amazing views from the top of these hills. Each hill has its own unique shape and story.

Highest Peaks: Kinder Scout and Bleaklow

Kinder Scout is the highest point in the Peak District, standing tall at 636 meters. It's a huge plateau, which is like a flat-topped mountain. Many streams flow from its edges, creating beautiful waterfalls.

Bleaklow is the second highest peak, reaching 633 meters. It's known for its wild, open moorland. Both Kinder Scout and Bleaklow offer challenging but rewarding walks for experienced hikers.
