Doraemon is a super popular Japanese manga (comic books) and anime (animated TV shows) series. It was created by Fujiko F. Fujio and published by Shogakukan. This fun series has been enjoyed by kids and families in many countries around the world!

Doraemon in America

Doraemon has made its way to North and South America. Here's how it spread:

United States and Canada

The Doraemon manga first came out in the United States and Canada in November 2013 on Amazon Kindle.

The anime had an early attempt to air in 1985. Turner Broadcasting System and a Canadian company called Cinar planned to show 50 episodes. However, the show didn't air as planned in the US. It did appear on CBC TV 8 in Barbados in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Later, TV Japan showed the original Japanese version of Doraemon without subtitles in the US and Canada from June 2012 to March 2014.

A special U.S. English version of Doraemon started airing on Disney XD in the US on July 7, 2014. Disney XD also showed some episodes in Canada in the summer of 2015.

The movie Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur 2006 was shown in Japanese with English subtitles in Washington, D.C., in November 2008. This was the first time Doraemon appeared in the US.

An English-dubbed version of the movie Stand by Me Doraemon premiered in October 2014.

Later, Netflix released an English dub of Stand by Me Doraemon 2 in Japan in November 2021. This version also came out worldwide on December 24, 2021.

The "Meet! Doraemon" exhibit, which came from the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum, was shown at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was open from February 15 to April 20, 2014.

Brazil

In Brazil, the 1979 Doraemon TV series tried to be released in the late 1980s but was too expensive. In October 1992, it finally aired on Rede Manchete as Doraemon, O Super-Gato. Not many episodes were dubbed, and it wasn't very successful then.

In 2014, the 2005 Doraemon series started airing as Doraemon, O Gato do Futuro.

Spanish-speaking Latin America

The 1979 Doraemon series was released in Latin America in 1999. A Spanish version, called Doraemon, el gato cósmico, was made in Mexico and shown in most countries. In 2014, the 2005 series also started airing with the same name.

Here's when Doraemon first appeared in some Latin American countries:

  • Colombia: The 1979 TV series started on October 11, 2003, on Caracol TV. The manga has not been released there.
  • Ecuador: The 1979 TV series started on April 1, 2002, on Ecuavisa. The 2005 series began on March 2, 2015. The manga has not been released there.
  • Pan-regional (across many countries): The 1979 series started on Movistar Play on September 2, 2019. The 2005 series began on Netflix on December 10, 2014. The manga has not been released there.

Doraemon is very popular across Asia. Here's how it spread:

China

The manga was released in China in 2008 as 哆啦A梦. The TV show first aired on Guangdong Television from 1989 to 1991. It was also shown on CCTV-2 in 1991 and CCTV-14 in 2007. Many cartoon channels aired it from 2004 to 2015. These were all from the 1979 anime series.

Doraemon movies have also been released in China, including Nobita's Dinosaur 2006 and Stand by Me Doraemon. The show is available in Mandarin Chinese and Uyghur.

Taiwan

In Taiwan, the manga was officially released in 1996 as 哆啦A夢. The TV show first aired in April 1991 on Star Chinese Channel. It was also shown on Taiwan Television starting in 1996 and Chinese Television System in 1998. The show is in Mandarin Chinese.

Hong Kong

The comic magazine "Doraemon" (哆啦A夢) was first introduced in Hong Kong in 1993. The TV show first aired in August 1981 on TVB Jade. It was also shown on Star Chinese Channel from April 1991 to March 1996. The show is in Cantonese.

India

In India, the anime started airing on Hungama TV in May 2005. This was the first time the Doraemon series came to India. Since November 2010, Disney Channel India has also been showing older dubbed episodes.

The Hindi-dubbed episodes started with the 1979 Doraemon series. Later, new episodes from the 2005 series began airing in October and November 2013 as New Doraemon. You can also find new seasons of Doraemon on Disney+ Hotstar in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Bangladesh

The Doraemon manga has not been released in Bangladesh. However, the anime was available on Disney Channel India. In February 2013, Bangladesh banned some foreign TV channels, including Disney Channel India, because of concerns that children were learning Hindi instead of Bengali.

Later, a Bengali-dubbed version of the 1979 anime started airing on Asian TV on April 1, 2014. The show is in Bengali.

Indonesia

In Indonesia, the manga was released in 1991 by Elex Media Komputindo. Doraemon first aired on RCTI on November 13, 1988. It has been airing continuously on RCTI since December 7, 1990, making it one of the longest-running animated shows in the country. Since 2011, they have been airing the 2005 version.

Doraemon was the first Japanese cartoon to be shown in Indonesia. The show is in Bahasa Indonesia.

South Korea

The manga was released in South Korea in 2001. The TV show first aired between 2001 and 2002 on MBC. It has also been shown on Anione and Champ TV since 2006. The show is in Korean.

Malaysia

The manga was published in Malaysia from 1992 to April 2017 by Tora Aman, and then from December 2018 by Gempak Starz. The TV show has aired on several channels, including TV1 (1988-1997, 2000-2002), NTV7 (2003-2018), and Astro AEC (2018-present). The show is available in Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin Chinese, and Tamil.

Philippines

In the Philippines, the Doraemon manga was first published in Filipino on December 1, 2009. The 1979 TV series first aired on December 1, 1999, on GMA. The 2005 TV series started on May 27, 2019, on Yey!. The show is available in Filipino and Cebuano.

Singapore

The manga was first published in American English and Singapore Mandarin in 2005 by Mediacorp Press. The 1979 TV series aired from January 30, 2000, to October 19, 2008, on Kids Central. The 2005 series started airing on Valentine's Day 2016 on Mediacorp Channel 8. The show is available in Malay (with English dubbing and Mandarin subtitles).

Thailand

In Thailand, the manga was licensed in the 1970s. The TV show first aired in 1982 on Channel 9 and in 1994 on Modernine TV. The show is in Thai.

Cambodia

In Cambodia, Doraemon started airing in 2014 on TV3 Asia. The show is in Khmer.

Vietnam

In Vietnam, the manga was first released in 1992. The TV show aired some episodes of the 1979 anime in the 2000s. Later, HTV3 aired the 1979 anime from January 9 to July 4, 2010, and then the rest of it from November 2014 to December 2015. HTV3 has been airing the 2005 anime since December 3, 2015. Doraemon movies have also been shown in cinemas since 2013. The show is in Vietnamese.

Doraemon in Europe

Doraemon has also found a home in Europe. Here are some countries where it's popular:

France

The manga was released in France in 2007. The anime first aired in 2003 on M6 and Fox Kids. It also started airing on Boing (France) in 2014.

Italy

In Italy, the manga was released in 2003. The anime first aired in 1982 on Rai 2. From 2003, Italia 1 started airing most of the 1979 series with new dubbing, and it became very successful. Since the 2010s, the 1979 series moved to Boing (Italy), and the 2005 series started airing in 2014.

Poland

In Poland, Doraemon started airing in 2014 on Disney XD Poland and in 2015 on Disney Channel Poland.

Portugal

The Doraemon manga has not been released in Portugal. However, the anime started airing in 2000 on Canal Panda. It has also been shown on RTP1 and RTP2 since 2001, and on Panda Biggs since 2009. More recently, it aired on Cartoon Network Portugal in 2015 and Boomerang Portugal in 2019.

Russia

In Russia, the manga was released in 1990. The anime first aired in 1993 on Channel One Russia.

Spain

The manga was released in Spain in 1994. The anime first aired in 1993 on TVE-2 and then on many regional TV channels in 1994. Doraemon is now also shown on Boing, a channel that airs across the whole country. Doraemon is like an unofficial mascot for Boing! The show is translated into Basque, Catalan, Galician, and Spanish. The first Doraemon film was shown on TV in 2000.

Turkey

In Turkey, Doraemon started airing in 2014 on Disney Channel Turkey.

Ukraine

In Ukraine, the manga was released in 1990. The anime first aired in 1993 on UA:Pershyi.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, Doraemon started airing on August 17, 2015, on Boomerang.

Doraemon in the Middle East

The show first aired in Arab countries in 1995. Since March 7, 2016, a dubbed version of the 2005 Doraemon series airs on Spacetoon. In Arabic, Doraemon is sometimes called "Abqoor" (عبقور), which means "mini Genius".

Israel

In Israel, the manga has not been released. The TV show first aired in 2004 on Fox Kids/Jetix (1979 series) and in 2014 on Disney Channel Israel (2005 series). The show is in Hebrew.

Australia

In Australia, the Doraemon manga has not been published. However, the anime started airing on January 26, 2015, on Network Ten.
