What is the National Register of Historic Places?

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation's historic places worth saving. It's managed by the National Park Service in the United States Department of the Interior. Think of it as a way to celebrate and protect places that tell us about America's story.

Why are places added to the list?

Places get on the National Register for many reasons. Maybe they are:

  • Very old and show how people lived long ago.
  • Designed in a special way by a famous architect.
  • Where important historical events happened.
  • Connected to important people in history.
  • Good examples of a certain style of building or engineering.

Being on the list encourages people to preserve these sites. It also helps them get special grants or tax benefits for their care.

Historic Places in Highlands County

Highlands County is home to a variety of historic places. From research stations to old train depots and beautiful homes, each one has a story to tell.

Archbold Biological Station

The Archbold Biological Station is a unique place located near Venus. It's not just a building; it's a whole area dedicated to studying nature. Scientists here learn about Florida's plants and animals, especially those found in the Florida scrub habitat. It was added to the National Register in 2007.

Avon Park Historic District

The Avon Park Historic District is a special area in Avon Park. It includes many buildings along Main Street that show what the town looked like in earlier times. Walking through this district is like taking a step back in time to see the town's history. It became a historic district in 1990.

Sebring's Historic Gems

The city of Sebring has many places on the National Register, often grouped together because they share a similar history or style. These include:

  • Central Station: This old train station, built in 1989, is a reminder of how people used to travel.
  • Elizabeth Haines House: A beautiful home built in 1993.
  • Edward Hainz House: Another historic home from 1989.
  • Harder Hall: This building, listed in 1990, has an interesting past.

  • Paul L. Vinson House: Another historic home from 1989.

These Sebring properties are often part of a "Multiple Property Submission" (MPS). This means they are recognized together because they share a common theme, like being built around the same time or in a similar architectural style.

Old Lake Placid Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Depot

Located in Lake Placid, this old train depot from 1993 is a great example of early 20th-century transportation. Train depots were once busy hubs where people arrived and departed, and goods were shipped.

Old Pinecrest Hotel

The Old Pinecrest Hotel in Avon Park was listed in 2000. Sadly, this historic hotel has since been demolished. Even though it's no longer standing, its place on the National Register reminds us of its past importance.
