The Ottoman Dynasty (also known as the Imperial House of Osman) was the ruling family of the Ottoman Empire. This powerful family led the empire from around 1299 until 1922.
The dynasty started with a leader named Osman I. However, the family wasn't officially recognized as a sultanate until 1383. That's when Murad I declared himself the sultan, which is like a king or emperor. Before 1383, the family might have been known by another name, but later they were called Osmanlı (which means Ottoman in English) to honor Osman I.
The sultan was usually the main ruler of the empire. But sometimes, other important officials, like the Grand Vizier (who was like a prime minister), held a lot of power too.
