The 2006 FIFA World Cup was a huge international football tournament. It took place in Germany from June 9 to July 9, 2006. Teams from 32 different countries competed to win the famous trophy.
In the exciting final match, Italy played against France. Italy won the championship after a thrilling penalty shootout. Germany, the host country, finished in third place.

The tournament began with the group stage. The 32 teams were divided into eight groups, from Group A to Group H. Each group had four teams. Teams in the same group played against each other once. Points were given for wins and draws. The top two teams from each group moved on to the next round.

Knockout Stage: The Road to the Final
After the group stage, the tournament became a knockout competition. This meant that if a team lost a match, they were out of the World Cup. Teams had to win every game to keep playing. This stage included the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and finally, the Third Place Play-off and the Grand Final.

The Final Match
The 2006 FIFA World Cup Final was played on July 9, 2006, in Berlin. It was a highly anticipated match between Italy and France. The game was very close and went into extra time. It ended in a 1-1 draw. The winner was decided by a penalty shootout. Italy won the shootout 5-3, becoming the champions of the 2006 FIFA World Cup!
