About Wimbledon's Ladies' Singles
Wimbledon is one of the four biggest tennis tournaments in the world. These are called Grand Slam events. Since 1987, Wimbledon has been the third Grand Slam played each year. It usually happens in the first two weeks of July.
A Look at Wimbledon's History
The tournament has been paused a few times. It didn't happen from 1915 to 1918 because of World War I. It was also stopped from 1940 to 1945 during World War II. More recently, the tournament was not played in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The rules for the ladies' singles have changed over the years. From 1886 to 1921, there was a special rule. The winner of the main tournament (called the "all comers' singles") would then play against the champion from the previous year. This final match was known as the "challenge round". If the previous year's champion didn't play, the "all comers' winner" automatically became the new champion. This happened eleven times. The challenge round system was stopped in 1922.
All matches in the ladies' singles are played as the best-of-three sets. This means a player needs to win two sets to win the match. Over time, the rules for how sets are won have also changed. For example, a "tie-break" was added in 1971 for the first two sets.
The Venus Rosewater Dish Trophy
The winner of the ladies' singles gets a special trophy. It's a silver plate known as the "Venus Rosewater Dish". People often just call it the "Rosewater Dish". This beautiful dish is about 48 centimeters (18.75 inches) wide. It is decorated with pictures of characters from old myths.
Winning at Wimbledon is a huge honor. New champions are usually made honorary members of the AELTC club. In 2023, the ladies' singles winner received a prize of £2,350,000.
Top Champions: Amateur Era
In the early days of Wimbledon, before professional players were allowed, there were some amazing champions. Dorothea Lambert Chambers holds the record for the most titles in this era, with seven wins. Three of her titles were won through the challenge round.
Lottie Dod and Suzanne Lenglen both won three titles in a row. Helen Wills Moody holds the record for the most wins after the challenge round was stopped. She won eight titles, including four in a row from 1927 to 1930.
Top Champions: Open Era
The "Open Era" began when professional tennis players were allowed to compete. Since then, Martina Navratilova has won the most ladies' singles titles. She has an incredible nine wins! Martina Navratilova also holds the record for winning six titles in a row, from 1982 to 1987.
Many champions have won the event without losing a single set. This shows how dominant they were. Some of these players include Billie Jean King, Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams.
