List of conflicts in British America facts for kids
This article is about the many conflicts that happened in the lands known as British America before the United States was formed. These lands were controlled by Britain. The conflicts included wars between European settlers and Native American tribes, battles between different European powers, and rebellions within the colonies themselves. These events took place up until 1783. That year, the Treaty of Paris officially ended the American Revolutionary War. After this, British America became the United States and British North America (which included Canada).
16th Century Conflicts
- 1565: Spanish forces attacked and killed French settlers, called French Huguenots, at Fort Caroline in Florida. This event is important because it was the first time two European powers fought each other in what is now the United States.
17th Century Conflicts
- 1609 - 1613: The First Anglo–Powhatan War took place. This was a series of fights between English settlers and the Powhatan Confederacy in Virginia.
- 1622: The Jamestown Attack happened. Native Americans from the Powhatan Confederacy attacked English settlers in the Jamestown Colony in Virginia.
- 1637: The Pequot War occurred in New England. This was a major conflict between English colonists and the Pequot tribe.
- 1637: The Kent Island Rebellion happened in Maryland.
- 1641 - 1667: The First Beaver War took place in the Great Lakes region. These wars were mainly between the Iroquois and other Native American tribes over control of the fur trade.
- 1643 - 1645: Kieft's War happened in New Netherland (which later became parts of New York and New Jersey).
- 1644 - 1646: The Third Anglo–Powhatan War followed a large attack by Opechancanough in Virginia.
- 1655: The Peach War occurred in New Netherland.
- 1659 - 1660: The First Esopus War happened in New Netherland.
- 1664: The Second Anglo-Dutch War led to England taking over New Netherland. They renamed it New York and New Jersey.
- 1673 - 1674: During the Third Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch briefly took back New York and New Jersey. However, they returned the land to the English after the war.
- 1675 - 1676: King Philip's War was a very destructive war in New England. It involved English colonists and Native American tribes led by Metacomet (also known as King Philip).
- 1675: The Battle of Bloody Brook was a part of King Philip's War.
- 1676: Bacon's Rebellion took place in Virginia. This was a revolt by colonists against the colonial government.
- 1689 - 1697: King William's War was fought. This was a major conflict between England and France, with their Native American allies, in North America.
18th Century Conflicts
- 1702 - 1713: Queen Anne's War was another major conflict between Britain and France (and their allies) in North America.
- 1704: The Raid on Deerfield was a famous attack during Queen Anne's War.
- 1711 - 1715: The Tuscarora War was fought between North Carolina colonists and the Tuscarora tribe.
- 1712: The New York Slave Revolt of 1712 was an uprising by enslaved people in New York City.
- 1715 - 1717: The Yamasee War took place in South Carolina. This was a conflict between colonists and the Yamasee tribe.
- 1722 - 1727: Dummer's War was fought with the Abenaki Native Americans in Maine and New Hampshire.
- 1730 - 1738: Cresap's War (also called the Conojocular War) was a border dispute between Pennsylvania and Maryland.
- 1739: The Stono Rebellion was a large slave rebellion in South Carolina.
- 1739 - 1748: The War of Jenkins' Ear was a conflict between Britain and Spain, mainly fought in the Caribbean and Georgia.
- 1742: The Battle of Bloody Marsh was fought in Georgia during this war.
- 1744 - 1748: King George's War was another major war between Britain and France in North America.
- 1754 - 1763: The French and Indian War (also known as the Seven Years' War in Europe) was a huge conflict. It was fought between Britain and France, along with their Native American allies, for control of North America. Britain won, gaining control of much of North America.
- 1754: The Battle of Fort Necessity was an early battle involving George Washington.
- 1755: The Braddock Expedition led to the Battle of the Monongahela.
- 1757: The Battle of Fort William Henry was a famous siege and battle.
- 1759: The Battle of Fort Niagara was a key British victory.
- 1758 - 1761: The Cherokee War took place in Georgia and the Carolinas.
- 1763: Pontiac's Rebellion was a widespread uprising by Native American tribes against British rule after the French and Indian War.
- 1763 - 1764: The Paxton Boys' Rebellion occurred in Pennsylvania.
- 1765: Stamp Act riots broke out in many colonies, including Boston and New York. These were protests against a new British tax.
- 1765 - 1771: The War of the Regulation was a conflict in North Carolina between ordinary citizens and corrupt colonial officials.
- 1771: The Battle of Alamance was the final battle of this war.
- 1770: The Boston Massacre was a clash where British soldiers shot and killed several colonists in Boston.
- 1772: The burning of the customs ship HMS Gaspee in Narragansett Bay was a major act of defiance against British authority.
