China (simplified Chinese: 中国; traditional Chinese: 中國; Pinyin: Zhōngguó) is a huge country in East Asia. It is known for its rich culture and ancient civilization. China is home to one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations.
After a Chinese Civil War (1927–1949), two main political groups emerged:
The Republic of China (ROC) (since 1911) is now usually called Taiwan. It controls islands like Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu.
The People's Republic of China (PRC) (since 1949) is what most people call China today. It governs mainland China, plus Hong Kong (since 1997) and Macau (since 1999).
