Slide Hollow is a small stream in Union County, Pennsylvania, USA. It is also known as Slide Hollow Run. This stream flows into another stream called Panther Run. Slide Hollow is about 1.2 miles (1.9 km) long. It flows through two areas: Lewis Township and Hartley Township. The land area that drains water into Slide Hollow is about 0.61 square miles (1.6 km2). Scientists have found 35 different natural substances dissolved in its water. Wild trout live and have babies here. People have also added trout to the stream in the past.

Where Does Slide Hollow Flow?

Slide Hollow starts in a valley. This valley is located between Jones Mountain and Middle Ridge in Lewis Township. The stream flows towards the west-southwest. It quickly enters Hartley Township.

It continues flowing west-southwest for a while. Then, the stream turns towards the west-northwest for a short distance. After that, it turns southwest. Further downstream, it meets Panther Run at a place called The Hook. Slide Hollow joins Panther Run about 0.46 miles (0.74 km) before Panther Run reaches its own end.

What's in Slide Hollow's Water?

Scientists measure different things about the water in Slide Hollow. The water's pH was once measured at 6.85. This number tells us how acidic or basic the water is. The amount of aluminum in the stream was about 12 micrograms per liter.

The amount of dissolved oxygen was 9.39 milligrams per liter. This is important for fish and other living things. The water's specific conductivity was 24 micro-siemens per centimeter. This measures how well the water conducts electricity. The amounts of sulfate, nitrate, and chloride were also measured.

What Elements Are Dissolved in the Water?

Scientists have found 35 different natural elements dissolved in the stream's water. These elements are present in amounts that can be detected.

In a study from 2006, the amounts of sodium and potassium in Slide Hollow were measured. They were 317 and 710 micrograms per liter, respectively. The amount of rubidium was much lower, only 0.728 micrograms per liter. The magnesium amount was 1100 micrograms per liter. The calcium amount was 1300 micrograms per liter. Other elements like strontium and barium were found in smaller amounts.

The 2006 study also found other elements. The amount of vanadium was 0.1 micrograms per liter. Manganese was 1.9 micrograms per liter. Cobalt was 0.022 micrograms per liter. Both nickel and copper were 0.8 micrograms per liter. The amount of zinc was 2.7 micrograms per liter. Scientists also found yttrium and cadmium. Many lanthanide elements were detected, except for two. The amounts of these elements varied.

Other elements found include silicon, arsenic, antimony, bromine, and iodine.

Geography and Watershed of Slide Hollow

The land around Slide Hollow is part of its watershed. This is the area of land where all the rain and snowmelt drain into the stream. The watershed of Slide Hollow covers about 0.61 square miles (1.6 km2).

The lowest point of the stream, near its mouth, is about 1427 feet (435 meters) above sea level. The highest point, where the stream begins at its source, is between 1660 and 1680 feet (506 and 512 meters) above sea level. The entire stream and its valley are located within the Hartleton quadrangle. This is a specific map area used by the United States Geological Survey.

History and Wildlife in Slide Hollow

The valley where Slide Hollow flows was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. Its special ID number in that system is 1187806. Slide Hollow is not an officially named stream. It gets its name from the valley it flows through. The stream is also known as Slide Hollow Run.

Wild trout naturally live and reproduce in Slide Hollow. They are found from the very beginning of the stream all the way to its end. In the 1930s, Slide Hollow was known as a good place for brook trout. During that time, people also stocked the stream with trout. This means they added more trout to the water.

In a study done in 2006, scientists observed eight different fish in Slide Hollow.
