ABC Kids (US) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

ABC Kids was a group of TV shows that aired on the ABC TV channel. It showed many different children's TV series. All these shows were owned by Disney, which also owns ABC. Most of them were also shown on Disney's own channel, Disney Channel. Before it was called ABC Kids, this block of shows was known as Disney's One Saturday Morning.

ABC Kids stopped airing on August 27, 2011. On September 3, 2011, a new block of shows called Litton's Weekend Adventure took its place.

History of ABC Kids

On September 13, 1997, Disney's One Saturday Morning began. It was first a two-hour block of shows on ABC's Saturday morning lineup. In 1999, it grew to be five hours long. On September 6, 1999, another show called Disney's One Too started airing on UPN and other local channels during weekdays and Sunday mornings. One Saturday Morning aired for the last time on September 7, 2002.

On September 14, 2002, Disney changed the name of One Saturday Morning to ABC Kids. At first, the block showed new programs. But later, all the shows on ABC Kids became repeats of shows that had already aired on Disney Channel.

Power Rangers on ABC Kids

Power Rangers used to air on Fox Kids. But halfway through the Wild Force season, Power Rangers moved to ABC Kids in Fall 2002. This happened because Disney bought Fox Family Channel and Saban Entertainment in 2001. The rest of the Wild Force season first aired on ABC Kids. Later, these episodes also re-aired on ABC Family.

The next season, Ninja Storm, also first aired on ABC Kids and then re-aired on ABC Family. Other seasons like Dino Thunder, S.P.D., Mystic Force, Operation Overdrive, and Jungle Fury first aired on Jetix and then re-aired on ABC Kids. The RPM season and updated episodes of the first Mighty Morphin season were shown only on ABC Kids.

Power Rangers stopped airing on ABC Kids on August 28, 2010. This was because Haim Saban bought back the rights to the show from Disney. He then gave the airing rights to Nickelodeon in May 2010. After leaving ABC Kids, Power Rangers moved to Nickelodeon. New seasons, starting with Samurai, began airing on the main Nickelodeon channel on February 7, 2011. Repeats of new and old seasons started airing on Nicktoons on February 11, 2011.

The End of ABC Kids

Some local ABC TV stations, like those owned by Hearst Television and Allbritton Communications, chose not to show programs that didn't meet certain educational TV rules. This included shows like Kim Possible or Power Rangers. Instead, they used that time to air their own local shows. However, some stations would show these programs at a different time, like very early on Saturday or on Sunday.

ABC Kids aired for the last time on August 27, 2011. After this, ABC stopped showing animated programs on Saturday mornings. This was the first time ABC did not air animated shows since September 1992.

Litton's Weekend Adventure

On May 24, 2011, ABC announced a new plan. They made a deal with a company called Litton Entertainment. Litton would create new shows for the Saturday morning block. This new block, called Litton's Weekend Adventure, started on September 3, 2011. It took the place of ABC Kids.
