Estonia first joined the Olympic Games in the 1920 Summer Olympics. This was just two years after the country became independent in 1918. The National Olympic Committee for Estonia was created in 1923.

Estonia's first time at the Winter Olympics was in 1928 Winter Olympics. Estonian athletes competed in the Olympics until 1940. At that time, the Soviet Union took over Estonia.

The 1980 Summer Olympics sailing events were held in Tallinn. Tallinn is the capital city of Estonia. After the Soviet occupation ended in 1991, Estonia has been part of every Olympic Games.

Estonia has won most of its Olympic medals in these sports:

  • Wrestling (11 medals)
  • Weightlifting (7 medals)
  • Cross-country skiing (7 medals)
