The show is hosted by Jiminy Cricket, with help from Mickey Mouse and Tinker Bell. It mixes new animation with parts of older Disney cartoons and movies. These clips are shown as "Christmas cards" from different Disney characters.
Later, starting in 1963, new versions of the show included previews of upcoming Disney movies. In 1983, it became 90 minutes long. It was renamed A Disney Channel Christmas for The Disney Channel. A home video version called Jiminy Cricket's Christmas came out in 1986.
This special is not shown often in the US anymore. But in Nordic countries like Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland, it has been broadcast every year since 1959. It is a very popular holiday tradition there. In Sweden, about 40% of people watch it on Christmas Eve. In 1997, over half the population watched it!

Changes Over the Years
From 1963 to the 1970s, the scenes with Walt Disney and Tinker Bell were removed. Santa's Workshop was also replaced. Instead, the show featured previews for new Disney movies. These included The Sword in the Stone (1963) and The Jungle Book (1967). Other previews were for The Aristocats (1970), Robin Hood (1973), and Pete's Dragon (1977). A live host, often Arne Weise, introduces the show. Donald Duck is more popular than Mickey Mouse in Sweden, which is why he is in the title. Bengt Feldreich narrates the show, dubbing Jiminy Cricket's original voice.
Why Kalle Anka is So Popular
The special, often just called Kalle Anka (Donald Duck), is a huge part of Swedish Christmas. Its popularity grew because for many years, SVT1 was the only TV channel in Sweden. Also, it was one of the few times American cartoons were shown on Swedish TV.
Kalle Anka is still one of the most-watched TV specials in Sweden. Until the 1990s, over five million people watched it. In 2019, 3.3 million viewers tuned in.
Protecting a Tradition
The Swedish public really loves Kalle Anka and wants it to stay the same. In the 1970s, there was a plan to stop showing it, but people protested, and it stayed. In 1982, Ferdinand the Bull was replaced with The Ugly Duckling. This caused a backlash, and Ferdinand was brought back the next year.
In 1992, the host, Arne Weise, wanted to record his segments early. This way, he could spend Christmas with his family. But he changed his mind after people criticized him for breaking tradition. In 2012, Disney edited the Santa's Workshop part to remove some old stereotypes. This also led to public discussion.
