List of musicians at English cathedrals facts for kids
The following list tells you about the people who have been organists at Church of England cathedrals in England.
English cathedrals have a long history of special music, often played on or with the help of the organ. The cathedral organist is a paid job. This person often also leads the choir, like a choirmaster. Sometimes there's also an assistant organist and a student organist, called an organ scholar.

Chichester Cathedral
Important organists at Chichester Cathedral include composer Thomas Weelkes and conductors John Birch and Nicholas Cleobury.
Before 1801, there were two separate jobs: 'Organist' and 'Master of the Choristers'. These jobs were combined when James Target was appointed. Since the mid-1800s, there has also been an Assistant Organist. Today, the 'Organist and Master of the Choristers' leads the choir and cathedral services. The 'Assistant Organist' plays for the choir.
The cathedral was attacked in December 1642. All church services stopped. They did not start again until the king returned in 1661. The choir started again that year, but a new organist was not appointed until 1668.
