India is a big country made up of many different parts. These parts are called states and union territories. Think of them like different regions or provinces within a country. India has 28 states and 8 union territories, including the special National Capital Territory of Delhi.
This article lists these states and union territories from the largest to the smallest based on their total land area. The numbers come from the 2011 census, which is like a big count of everything in the country.

The total area of India is about 3.29 million square kilometers. This number sometimes changes slightly because of small measurement differences or areas that are claimed by more than one country. |
Recent Changes to India's Map
In August 2019, the Indian Parliament made a big decision. They changed the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two new union territories. These are called Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh. This change officially happened on October 31, 2019. This means the map of India now has 28 states and 8 union territories.
