List of MPs elected to the English parliament in 1624 facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This is a list of the people chosen to be members of Parliament (MPs) for the very last parliament during the time of King James I. This parliament met in 1624 and was known as the Happy Parliament.

The parliament started on February 19, 1624. It met until May 24, 1624. Then, it met again from November 2, 1624, to February 16, 1625. It ended when the King passed away on March 14, 1625.

Understanding the Parliament

What is Parliament?

A parliament is like a big meeting where people chosen from different parts of a country come together. Their job is to discuss important issues, make laws, and advise the ruler. In England, the Parliament was a key part of how the country was run.

Who are MPs?

MPs, or Members of Parliament, are the people elected to represent different areas. Each MP speaks for the people in their area, called a constituency. They bring their concerns and ideas to the Parliament.

The "Happy Parliament" of 1624

This parliament was called the "Happy Parliament" because it worked well with King James I. They agreed on many things, especially about England's foreign policy. This was a time when the King and Parliament usually had disagreements, so this period of agreement was special.

Areas and Their Representatives

In 1624, some areas that had lost their right to elect MPs got it back. These included Amersham, Great Marlow, Wendover, and Hertford. This happened after a special group, the Committee of Privileges, looked into why these towns no longer had their MPs.

Here is a list of the areas (constituencies) and the MPs who represented them in the 1624 Parliament. Sometimes, an MP might have been chosen for more than one area. If that happened, they picked one area to represent, and someone else took their place in the other area.
