Routes in Delaware

This article lists the main numbered roads in Delaware. These include Interstate Highways, U.S. Routes, and state routes. The Delaware Department of Transportation takes care of all these roads.

State routes in Delaware use a round highway sign. Delaware's road numbering system is similar to U.S. Highways. Roads with odd numbers usually go north and south. Roads with even numbers usually go east and west. The numbers generally get higher as you go south or west. However, some roads keep their numbers from other states, which can sometimes break this pattern.

History of Delaware's Roads

The first numbered roads in Delaware appeared in 1925. These were part of the U.S. Highway System. They included US 13, US 40, and US 113, which were planned to go through the state.

In the early 1930s, the Delaware State Highway Department suggested adding numbers to state roads. This was to help organize the roads alongside the U.S. Highway System. By 1936, Delaware started giving numbers to its own state routes.

Later, in 1956, the Interstate Highway System was created. Delaware got less than 40 miles of Interstate highways in New Castle County.
