Discussions About His Titles
There were sometimes discussions about what titles Prince Philip should have.
His Royal Title
After he married Princess Elizabeth, many people started calling him "Prince Philip." This was because he had been a Prince of Greece and Denmark by birth. However, the King at the time, George VI, had intentionally not given him the title of "British Prince" when he married.
Later, in 1953, a Canadian politician suggested he be called Prince of the Commonwealth. The Queen liked this idea, but some leaders and Philip himself weren't sure. Eventually, in 1957, it was officially announced that he would be known as His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. This made him a Prince of the United Kingdom.
Order of Australia Award
In 2015, Prince Philip was made a Knight of the Order of Australia. This caused some debate in Australia. The Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, who recommended the award, later said it might not have been the best decision at the time.
Prince Philip had a long and distinguished career in the Royal Navy. Here are some of his ranks:
- 1940 – 1941: He served as a Midshipman on ships like HMS Ramillies and HMS Valiant.
- 1941 – 16 July 1942: He became a Sub-Lieutenant on HMS Wallace.
- 16 July 1942 – October 1942: He was promoted to Lieutenant on HMS Wallace.
- October 1942 – 15 August 1950: He served as a First Lieutenant on HMS Wallace, HMS Whelp, and HMS Chequers.
- 15 August 1950 – 2 February 1952: He became a Lieutenant Commander on HMS Chequers and HMS Magpie.
- 2 February 1952 – 15 January 1953: He was a Commander on HMS Magpie.
- 15 January 1953 – 9 April 2021: He reached the highest naval rank, Admiral of the Fleet.
- 10 June 2011 – 9 April 2021: He was also the Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom, a very old and important naval role.
