The Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle (Spanish: Orden Mexicana del Águila Azteca) is Mexico's highest award given to people from other countries. It's part of the Mexican Honors System. This special award recognizes foreigners who have done great things for Mexico or for all of humanity.

History of the Order

This important award was created on December 29, 1933. It was established by the then President, Abelardo L. Rodríguez. The idea was to honor people from other nations for their valuable contributions. It's similar to awards given to Mexican citizens, like the Condecoración Miguel Hidalgo.

The foreign minister of Mexico gives out this award. They do this based on instructions from a special Council. The President leads this Council. The name "Aztec Eagle" comes partly from an older award. This older award, called the Imperial Order of the Mexican Eagle, was created in 1865.

What the Design Means

The design of the Aztec Eagle award looks a lot like the coat of arms of Mexico. You can see a golden eagle holding a rattlesnake. This image is very important in Mexican history and is connected to the ancient Aztec civilization. It represents strength and heritage.

Different Levels of the Award

The Order of the Aztec Eagle has different levels, also called "classes" or "grades." These levels depend on the importance of the person receiving the award. Since March 2011, the classes are:

  • Collar: This is the highest level. It is given to heads of state, like presidents or kings.
  • Sash of Special Category: This level is for prime ministers, heads of government, royal princes or princesses, and spouses of heads of state.
  • Sash: This is awarded to government ministers, secretaries, members of royal families, and ambassadors.
  • Plaque: This level is for government undersecretaries, special ministers, consuls general, and high-ranking military officers.
  • Venera: This award is for business representatives, colonels, ship captains, and similar embassy staff.
  • Insignia: This is given to temporary business representatives and other members of diplomatic teams. It also goes to captains and navy lieutenants.

The Council can decide to give any of these awards, except the Collar, to other distinguished foreigners. Before 2011, there were slightly different classes, but the idea of different levels of honor remained the same.
