Coastal Connecticut facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Coastal Connecticut, often called the Connecticut Shore or the Connecticut Shoreline, is the beautiful southern edge of Connecticut. It stretches along the Long Island Sound, from Greenwich in the west all the way to Stonington in the east. This area also includes parts of rivers like the Housatonic River, Quinnipiac River, Connecticut River, and Thames River where the ocean's tides reach. It covers the southern parts of four counties: Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London.

Life in Coastal Connecticut is a bit different from inland Connecticut. Many people here love activities tied to the water, like boating and going to the beach. The region also welcomes many tourists from May to October. Coastal Connecticut has the mildest winters in the state. It often has a "frost-free" season that is about a month longer than areas further inland. This region includes 36 towns, some of which are among the largest in Connecticut.
