The Philippines is a country that loves sports! It has sent athletes to almost every Summer Olympic Games since it first joined in 1924. The only time they didn't go was in 1980, when many countries decided not to participate. Filipino athletes have also competed in the Winter Olympic Games six times since 1972.

The Philippines also takes part in the Summer Youth Olympic Games and the Winter Youth Olympic Games, which are special Olympics for younger athletes.

Joining the Olympic Games

The group in charge of Filipino athletes at the Olympics is called the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC). They have been the official committee since 1975. Before that, another group, the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation, handled things. The Philippines has been a recognized member of the International Olympic Committee since 1929. This means they are officially part of the global Olympic family.

Filipino athletes have won a total of 18 Olympic medals so far (as of the 2024 Summer Olympics). Boxing is the sport where they have won the most medals. On July 26, 2021, the Philippines won its very first gold medal! This happened at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Hidilyn Diaz made history by winning in women's weightlifting.

At the 2020 Tokyo Games, the Philippines won 1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal. This was their best performance at the Olympics up to that point! They were the top-performing country from Southeast Asia, a title they also held in 1964.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris was a very special event for the Philippines. It marked 100 years since they first joined the Games! This was also their best Olympic performance ever. Carlos Yulo won two gold medals in men's floor and vault events. Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio each won a bronze medal in women's flyweight and featherweight boxing.

Summer Olympics History

The Philippines first competed in the Olympic Games in 1924 in Paris. This made them the first country from Southeast Asia to compete in the Olympics. Later, in 1928, they won their first medal. The Philippines has competed in almost every Summer Olympic Games since then. They did not participate in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. They also planned not to join the 1940 Games, but those were canceled because of World War II.

Winter Olympics History

The Philippines was the first tropical nation to compete in the Winter Olympic Games. They sent two alpine skiers to the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan. Since then, they have participated in some winter games, competing in sports like alpine skiing and luge. In 2014, the Philippines sent the first Filipino and Southeast Asian figure skater to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. This was also the first time a tropical country had a male figure skater in the Olympics!

Art Competitions in the Olympics

Did you know that the Olympics used to have art competitions? The Philippines took part in these art competitions at the Summer Olympic Games until 1948. This was the last time art was part of the Games. In 1948, Filipino artists Graciano Nepomuceno, a famous sculptor, and Hernando R. Ocampo, a respected painter, represented their country. They showed off the Philippines' rich culture and art on a world stage. Their participation proved that the country was involved not just in sports, but also in promoting art within the Olympic movement.
