England has many universities, which are places where young adults go to study after school. As of August 2017, there were 106 universities and 5 university colleges in England. This is a big part of the 130 universities found across the whole United Kingdom.

These universities are officially recognized by the Office for Students (OfS), which is a group that checks if universities are doing a good job.

What are Universities?

Universities are special places for Higher Education, meaning learning that happens after you finish high school. They offer different courses and degrees. When we talk about a university being "established," it means the year it officially became a university. Sometimes, a university was first a smaller college before it became a full university. The date in brackets shows when it started as that smaller college.

For example, if you see "1992 (1858)," it means the place became a university in 1992, but it started as a college way back in 1858. If you only see a year in brackets, like "– (1965)," it means it's a "university college" or part of a bigger university system, and it started in 1965.
