The South Plains is a special area in northwest Texas. It is made up of 24 different counties. This region is famous for growing a lot of cotton. It is also a big area for farming and raising cattle.

What is the South Plains Region?

The South Plains is a large flat area. It is part of a bigger landform called the Llano Estacado. This region is located south of the Texas Panhandle. The city of Lubbock is right in the middle of the South Plains.

This area is important for two main things. First, it produces a lot of petroleum, which is oil. Second, it is a huge farming region. Farmers here grow a lot of the nation's cotton. There are also many large ranches where cattle are raised. The South Plains is also home to several colleges and universities. The biggest one is Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Counties of the South Plains

The South Plains region includes 24 counties. These counties work together as part of the region.

Four of these counties are also part of the Texas Panhandle. These are Parmer, Castro, Swisher, and Briscoe counties.

Major Cities and Towns

Many cities and towns are found in the South Plains. These places are home to the people who live and work in this region.

Cotton Production in the South Plains

Cotton is the most important crop grown in the South Plains. This region is known for its huge cotton farms. In 2004 and 2005, farmers broke records for how much cotton they produced.

In an area of 31 counties, including the South Plains, over a million bales of cotton were harvested in 2005. A bale of cotton is a very large bundle of cotton. This makes the South Plains the largest cotton-producing region in the entire world!

South Plains Identity

Many businesses and groups use "South Plains" in their names. This helps show that they are part of this special region. For example, there is South Plains College in Levelland. The Panhandle-South Plains Fair is held every year in Lubbock. Other groups like the South Plains Regional Chapter of the American Red Cross and the South Plains Council of the Boy Scouts of America also use the name. This shows a strong sense of community and regional pride.
