The World Junior Wushu Championships (WJWC) is a big international competition for young athletes who practice wushu. Wushu is a cool Chinese martial art that includes both graceful movements and exciting fighting. This championship is organized by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF). It's for competitors who are under 18 years old.

The championships have two main types of events. One is Taolu, which is like performing a set routine of movements. The other is Sanda, which is a type of full-contact fighting.

History of Events

Taolu Events

Taolu events are like gymnastics routines, where athletes perform a series of movements. There are different age groups for Taolu competitors.

Group A

Group A has been part of the championships since the very first one in 2006. The age group for these athletes was originally 16-18 years old. In 2019, this changed to 15-17 years old.

From 2006 to 2012, Group A athletes had to use specific routines set by the IWUF. These were called the "second set of compulsory routines." In 2014 and 2016, they used the "third set of compulsory routines." Starting in 2018, Group A athletes were allowed to create their own routines. They were judged on their performance without needing to meet a "Degree of Difficulty" score.

Some Group A athletes from the 2014 World Junior Wushu Championships were able to compete in the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. Wushu was shown as a demonstration sport there. Wushu was also part of the 2014 Nanjing Sports Lab, which promoted sports not yet in the Olympics.

Group B

Group B also started with the first championships. The age group was first 13-15 years old. In 2019, this changed to 12-14 years old. Group B athletes have always used the IWUF's "first set of compulsory routines."

Group C

Group C was added to the championships in 2008. The age group was originally 9-12 years old. In 2019, it changed to 7-11 years old. Group C athletes have always used the IWUF's "elementary routines."

Sanda Events

Sanda is a full-contact fighting style in wushu. For a long time, Sanda competitions only had different weight categories, not age groups. In 2018, the rules were updated. They now include separate "junior" and "children" age categories. Each of these categories has its own weight divisions for competitors.
