List of English royal consorts facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The English royal consorts were the husbands or wives of the kings and queens who ruled the Kingdom of England. This list covers consorts up until 1707, when England joined with Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. After that, there were no longer separate English consorts.

Most consorts were women, known as queen consorts. They held special titles and honors. A few consorts were men, and their titles varied depending on their wives' reigns. This list does not include Mary I and Philip II, or William III and Mary II, because they ruled together as joint monarchs, not as consort and monarch.

The husband of Queen Mary I was Philip II of Spain. He became king of England because of his marriage to Mary, so he is not considered a consort in the usual sense.

Disputed Consort

Lady Jane Grey was briefly queen, though her claim was disputed. Her husband, Guildford Dudley, is included here as a consort during that time.

House of Stuart (1603–1707)

When Elizabeth I passed away, the English crown went to her cousin, James VI of Scotland. He became James I of England, uniting the crowns of England and Scotland. The Stuart family ruled until 1714, with a break between 1649 and 1660. In 1707, the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland officially joined to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. After this, there were no longer separate English monarchs or consorts.
