List of cathedrals in Australia facts for kids
A cathedral is a special Christian church. It's like the main or "mother" church for a diocese, which is an area managed by a bishop. What makes a cathedral unique is that it holds the bishop's special chair, called a cathedra. Only Christian groups that have bishops usually have cathedrals.
Sometimes, people think a church is a cathedral just because it's big or grand. But that's not always true! Many cathedrals are grand because they are important churches, not the other way around. A cathedral can even be a small building, especially in places with fewer people or less money. Modern cathedrals often focus more on being a good place for worship than on being super fancy.
Some cathedrals were built to be cathedrals from the start. Others were once regular local churches that later became cathedrals because of church needs or changes in the diocese.
This list shows cathedrals in Australia, grouped by their Christian denomination. You'll also find a list of churches that used to be cathedrals or were planned to be but never finished.
