History of the Wax Museum
Starting a New Attraction
In 2013, a company called Merlin Entertainments made a deal. They leased the building that used to be the Wax Museum at Fishermans Wharf. Their plan was to turn it into two new attractions. These were the Madame Tussauds wax museum and the San Francisco Dungeon.
The original Wax Museum had been open for 50 years. It had more than 270 wax figures. It was a long-standing part of Fisherman's Wharf.
Changes and Closure
The San Francisco Dungeon, which was next door, closed during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. It never reopened after that.
Merlin Entertainments decided to close Madame Tussauds San Francisco on August 3, 2024. This closure marked the end of a 60-year history of wax museums in Fisherman's Wharf. Most of the wax figures from the San Francisco museum were sent to other Madame Tussauds locations. There are 23 other museums around the world.
Famous Figures You Could See
Many famous people were turned into wax figures at Madame Tussauds San Francisco. Visitors could get up close to their favorite stars and historical figures.
