Max Purcell (born 3 April 1998) is a professional tennis player from Australia. He has achieved impressive rankings in his career. He reached world No. 40 in singles in October 2023. In doubles, he climbed to No. 8 in September 2024.

Max has won two major Grand Slam titles in doubles. He won at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships with Matthew Ebden. He also won the 2024 US Open with Jordan Thompson. He has been a finalist at the 2020 and 2022 Australian Open. He also reached the final at 2024 Wimbledon. Max Purcell represented Australia at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Max Purcell's Tennis Journey

Starting His Tennis Journey (2016–2019)

In July 2016, Max Purcell won his first big tournament. This was the Gimcheon Challenger in South Korea. He was ranked No. 762 at the time, which made his win very special. He finished that year ranked No. 324 in the world.

In 2017, Max played in the Australian Open doubles. He teamed up with fellow Australian Alex de Minaur. Max also won three smaller Futures Tour titles that year. He ended 2017 ranked No. 277.

Grand Slam Doubles Final (2020)

In January 2020, Max Purcell played in his first Grand Slam singles match. This was at the Australian Open. He also teamed up with Luke Saville in the men's doubles. They had an amazing run, reaching the final! They finished as runners-up. Later that year, they reached another final at the 2020 Astana Open.

First ATP Semifinal and Olympic Debut (2021)

Max started 2021 with his first win in an ATP main tournament. This was at the 2021 Great Ocean Road Open. He then made a big splash at the 2021 Eastbourne International. He beat a top 20 player, Gaël Monfils, to reach his first ATP singles quarterfinal. He then won again to reach his first semifinal.

In July, he won his second Challenger singles title in Kazakhstan. This helped him enter the top 200 singles rankings. Max also got to play at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He had a huge win there, beating world No. 15 Félix Auger-Aliassime. He also played doubles at the Olympics.

He continued to do well, reaching the third round of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open. He also reached the quarterfinals in doubles at the 2021 US Open. By October 2021, he reached his highest singles ranking of No. 175.

Wimbledon Doubles Champion (2022)

The year 2022 was a fantastic one for Max in doubles. He partnered with Matthew Ebden. At the Australian Open, they had an incredible journey. They beat four seeded teams to reach the final. It was an all-Australian final, but they finished as runners-up.

Max also played singles at Wimbledon for the first time. In the doubles event, Max and Matthew Ebden were seeded 14th. They had an amazing run, beating top teams. They won their semifinal in a very long, close match. Then, they went on to win their first Grand Slam title together! It was a thrilling five-set match.

Climbing the Singles Rankings (2023)

For the 2023 season, Max decided to focus more on his singles career. He qualified for the 2023 Australian Open in singles. He also played doubles with Jordan Thompson.

Max had a great start to his singles year. He won three Challenger titles in a row in India. These wins helped him climb into the top 100 singles rankings. By March 2023, he was ranked No. 95. He continued to rise, reaching No. 86 in April.

In April, he won his third ATP doubles title in Houston with Jordan Thompson. At the 2023 French Open, he got his first Grand Slam singles win.

A big moment came at the 2023 Western & Southern Open. As a qualifier, he beat fifth seed Casper Ruud. This was his first win against a top 10 player! He then beat Stan Wawrinka to reach his first Masters quarterfinal. This pushed him into the top 50 singles rankings. By October 2023, he reached his career-high singles ranking of No. 40. He also won his fourth doubles title in Japan with Rinky Hijikata.

US Open Doubles Champion (2024)

Max started 2024 at the Brisbane International. He won his first match at the Australian Open.

In doubles, he continued his success with Jordan Thompson. They won their fifth doubles title at the 2024 Dallas Open. They then won their sixth title at the 2024 Los Cabos Open. In April, they won their fourth title as a team at the 2024 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships.

Max reached his first singles ATP final at the 2024 Eastbourne International as a qualifier. This helped him get back into the top 70 singles rankings.

Partnering with Jordan Thompson, he reached his second final at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. They were runners-up in a very close match. Then, at the US Open, Max and Jordan reached their second Grand Slam doubles final of the season. They won the title, making it Max's second Grand Slam doubles trophy!
