Max Purcell (born 3 April 1998) is an Australian professional tennis player. He is known for his success in doubles tennis. Max reached his highest singles ranking of world No. 40 in October 2023. He achieved a doubles ranking of No. 8 in September 2024.
In doubles, Max won his first major title at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. He won this title with his partner, Matthew Ebden. They also reached the finals at the 2022 Australian Open. Max also made it to the finals of the 2020 Australian Open with Luke Saville. In 2024, he reached the Wimbledon final and won the US Open with Jordan Thompson. He has also played for Australia at the Olympic Games.

Max Purcell's Tennis Journey
Starting His Career (2016–2019)
In July 2016, Max Purcell won his first big tournament, the Gimcheon Challenger in South Korea. He was ranked No. 762 at the time. This made him one of the lowest-ranked players to win such a title in 16 years. He ended that year ranked No. 324 in the world.
In 2017, Max played in the Australian Open doubles event. He teamed up with Alex de Minaur. Max also won three smaller Futures Tour titles that year. He finished 2017 ranked No. 277.
Reaching a Grand Slam Final (2020)
Max made his first appearance in a major singles tournament at the 2020 Australian Open. He lost in the first round. However, in the men's doubles event, he and Luke Saville had a great run. They reached the final but lost to Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. Later that year, they also reached another final at the 2020 Astana Open.
First ATP Semifinal and Olympic Games (2021)
In 2021, Max got his first win in an ATP main draw tournament. He then beat a top-20 player, Gaël Monfils, at the Eastbourne International. This helped him reach his first ATP singles semifinal. He also won his second Challenger singles title in Kazakhstan.
Max also got to play at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He had a big win against world No. 15 Félix Auger-Aliassime. He also played in the doubles event there. By the end of 2021, Max reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 175.
Becoming a Wimbledon Champion (2022)
The year 2022 was a huge one for Max in doubles. He teamed up with Matthew Ebden for the Australian Open. They made it all the way to the final, beating many top teams. They lost a close match in the final to fellow Australians Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios.
Max then played in the singles main draw at Wimbledon for the first time. In the doubles event at Wimbledon, Max and Ebden were amazing. They reached their second major final, winning tough matches against top teams. In the final, they played a thrilling five-set match that lasted over four hours. They won their first Grand Slam title together, beating Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic.
Focusing on Singles and Top 50 Ranking (2023)
After his big doubles success, Max decided to focus more on his singles career in 2023. He won three Challenger titles in a row in India. This helped him break into the top 100 singles rankings.
He also won his third ATP doubles title in Houston with Jordan Thompson. At the 2023 Western & Southern Open, Max had a fantastic run. He beat world No. 7 Casper Ruud for his first win against a top 10 player. He then reached his first Masters quarterfinal. This success pushed him into the top 50 in singles. By October 2023, he reached his career-high singles ranking of No. 40.
More Doubles Grand Slam Success (2024)
Max started 2024 by reaching his first singles ATP final at the 2024 Eastbourne International. He was a qualifier and made it all the way to the final match.
In doubles, he continued his strong partnership with Jordan Thompson. They won three ATP 250 titles together. They also reached their second Grand Slam final as a team at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. They played a very close match, losing in three tie-break sets.
Later in 2024, Max and Jordan Thompson reached another Grand Slam final at the US Open. This time, they won! They defeated Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz to lift their first Grand Slam trophy as a team. This was Max's second Grand Slam doubles title overall.
Playing for Australia
Max Purcell has proudly represented Australia in the Davis Cup. He helped his country reach the finals in both the 2022 and 2023 Davis Cup tournaments. He has a strong record in doubles matches for Australia.
