Serbia first joined the Olympic Games way back in 1912. Back then, it was known as the Kingdom of Serbia. After a long break of 96 years, Serbia came back to the Olympics as its own team at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Serbia's Olympic Journey

Early Days and First Medals

Even though Serbia did not compete in the first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, the Serbian King Aleksandar Obrenović was there. He was invited by the Greek King George I. At these early Games, a tennis player named Momčilo Tapavica won a bronze medal. He was from a part of Serbia called Vojvodina and competed for Kingdom of Hungary. He was the first Serb to win an Olympic medal.

Starting the Olympic Movement in Serbia

The Serbian Olympic Club was created on February 23, 1910. A very important person in Serbia's Olympic history is Major Svetomir Đukić. He is seen as the founder of the Olympic movement in Serbia. In 1912, the Club changed its name to the Olympic Committee of Serbia. That same year, the International Olympic Committee officially recognized it.

Serbia's Olympic History Under Different Flags

For many years, Serbian athletes competed as part of other teams.

Famous Serbian Olympians

One amazing athlete is Jasna Šekarić, a shooter who competed in seven Olympic Games. She won a gold medal in 1988. What's special about her is that she competed under four different flags during her 24-year career! She started with Yugoslavia in 1988. Then she was an Independent Participant in 1992. From 1996 to 2004, she competed for Serbia and Montenegro. Finally, in 2008 and 2012, she proudly represented Serbia.

Another important person was Borislav Stanković. He was a basketball player and later a leader in sports. He worked for FIBA, the international basketball group, and was also part of the International Olympic Committee. He helped change the rules so that NBA players could compete in the Olympics. Before the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, only professional players from other leagues were allowed.

Serbia's Olympic Past: Predecessor Countries

The Olympic Committee of Serbia was founded in 1910. It is seen as the direct continuation of the Yugoslav Olympic Committee and the Olympic Committee of Serbia and Montenegro. This means that the medals won by athletes from these older countries are also part of Serbia's Olympic history. From 1920 to 2006, athletes representing these former countries won a total of 99 medals. Most of these (95) were at the Summer Games, and 4 were at the Winter Games.

Here's a breakdown of medals won by these predecessor countries:

Country № Summer Gold Silver Bronze Total № Winter Gold Silver Bronze Total № Games Gold Silver Bronze Combined Total
