World of Color is an amazing night-time show at Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim, California. It's part of the Disneyland Resort. The show uses almost 1,200 musical water fountains. It also includes lights, fire, lasers, and fog. High-definition videos are projected onto screens made of mist.
The show was created by Steve Davison and designed by Walt Disney Creative Entertainment. It's inspired by Walt Disney's old TV show, Wonderful World of Color. You can hear the theme song from that show, written by the Sherman Brothers.
It took about 15 months to build and test all the parts for World of Color in Paradise Bay. The first version of the show opened on June 11, 2010. This was part of a special summer event called "Summer Nightastic!". The whole show cost about $75 million to make.
The show happens in the Paradise Bay lagoon. Guests watch from the Paradise Lagoon Amphitheater. This area is in front of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure ride. Other nearby attractions, like Pixar Pal-A-Round and Incredicoaster, become part of the show. They have special lights and projections during the performance. All the effects, like water, mist, fire, and lasers, work together with the music and projected images.

Building the Show: How World of Color Was Made
The idea for World of Color was first announced in 2007. It was originally called Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color. Work on the water show began on November 3, 2008, when the lagoon was drained. Building the main platform started on January 5, 2009. The water was put back into Paradise Bay in November 2009.
Testing of the show began in January 2010. This happened during and after park hours. The first public show was on June 5, 2010, for the people who created it and special guests. Before the official opening on June 11, there were private viewings. These were for park employees, contest winners, and a big celebrity premiere.
What You See: Show Elements and Special Effects

The show uses almost 1,200 fountains. These fountains can shoot water up to 200 feet (61 meters) high! Each fountain has a special LED light ring. There's also a 380-foot (116-meter) long mist screen. Images are projected onto this screen. Similar, but smaller, screens are used in Fantasmic! at Disneyland.
Special devices can shoot flames up to 50 feet (15 meters) into the air. Fog and lasers are also used. Dome-shaped projectors rise from the water. They show lighting effects and videos inside them. Lasers and videos are also projected onto the sun icon behind Incredicoaster’s loop.
The Pixar Pal-A-Round Ferris wheel and Incredicoaster have LED lights. These lights are synchronized with the show. Light towers also rise from boxes around Pixar Pier. These towers have speakers, bubble machines, and special lights.
The viewing area, called Paradise Lagoon Amphitheater, can hold up to 4,000 people. It has different levels, like the viewing area for Fantasmic at Disneyland. It also has hidden fountains in the flower beds that are part of the show.
All versions of World of Color use clips from Walt Disney Studios. This includes movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm.
The Story: What Happens in World of Color
The music for the show was arranged by Mark Hammond and Dave Hamilton. The London Symphony Orchestra and The Nashville Choir performed it. Special paper animation was created by artist Megan Brain.
The show starts with an introduction from Dick Wesson. He was the original announcer for Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color. A quote from Walt Disney appears on the mist screen: "Every child is blessed with a vivid imagination." The theme song then changes into the World of Color version.
As the introduction ends, Ariel appears. She is seen before a sunset on the mist screens. The show then goes into The Little Mermaid part. Ariel sings "Part of Your World" and Sebastian sings "Under the Sea".
After "Under the Sea," Crush and Squirt from Finding Nemo appear. They are riding the East Australian Current. The water fountains make it look like rough ocean waves. The scene then shows Marlin and Dory meeting the blue whale from Finding Nemo. This leads into the "Pines of Rome" part from Fantasia 2000.
The bay turns into outer space. Eve and WALL-E from WALL-E appear and dance. WALL-E uses a fire extinguisher to make small clouds. These clouds then become Andy's room from Toy Story. Sheriff Woody and Buzz Lightyear appear on Andy's bed. Buzz tries to fly, and Andy's room changes into a battle between Buzz and Emperor Zurg from Toy Story 2.
Next, Carl Fredrickson's house from Up briefly appears. Then, the setting changes to Aladdin. Aladdin and Princess Jasmine sing "A Whole New World". Suddenly, the Genie appears and takes over the show. He performs "Friend Like Me".
After the Genie disappears, the Spring Sprite from Fantasia 2000 turns the bay into a beautiful forest. Pocahontas appears, singing "Just Around the Riverbend". The Pocahontas part ends with dramatic fountains set to "Farewell."
After a short break, Heimlich from A Bug's Life warns of a coming storm. The storm gets stronger, showing scenes from The Old Mill. This is set to a spooky version of "Little April Showers" from Bambi. As the storm clears, Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean appears. You can faintly hear "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)".
The bay then turns blood-red. Fountains and flames move with the music of "He's a Pirate". Battle scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean are shown on the mist screens. After the Pirates of the Caribbean part, the show gets darker. Mufasa's death scene from The Lion King plays out.
After a moment of quiet, the show reaches its most exciting part. "So Close" from Enchanted plays. Touching scenes from Disney animated films are shown. These include The Lion King, Frozen 2, Dumbo, Tangled, Lady and the Tramp, The Princess and the Frog, and Beauty and the Beast.
The transformation scene from Beauty and the Beast happens. Then, other famous moments from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, The Princess and the Frog, and Cinderella are shown. After Cinderella, the fountains and lights turn white and the lagoon goes dark.
The fountains slowly start moving again. They swirl around the lagoon until Tinker Bell appears. She makes the bay burst into many colors. For the grand finale, "The Wonderful World of Color" theme plays again. The bay becomes a kaleidoscopic mix of scenes from many films. These include Alice in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, WALL-E, Toy Story, Aladdin, Fantasia 2000, Pocahontas, The Old Mill, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, Lilo & Stitch, and The Princess and the Frog.
Finally, Mickey Mouse appears in his "Sorcerer's Apprentice" outfit from Fantasia. The show ends with a spectacular display of water, fire, lasers, and lights.
