How Action Against Hunger Started
Action Against Hunger was created in 1979. A group of French doctors, scientists, and writers started it. A famous scientist named Alfred Kastler, who won a Nobel Prize, was their first leader. Today, a businessman from India named Ashwini Kakkar is the International President.
Early Help and Big Ideas
When they first started, Action Against Hunger helped people in need. They assisted Afghan refugees in Pakistan. They also helped communities in Uganda that were suffering from famine. And they supported Cambodian refugees in Thailand.
In the 1980s and 1990s, they grew bigger. They started helping in many more places. This included parts of Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
Action Against Hunger's science team came up with a special milk formula. It's called F100 (F100). This milk helps treat very sick, malnourished children. Now, many other aid groups use it too. This special milk can lower the number of severely malnourished children who die to less than 5%.
A few years later, they made F100 even easier to use. They turned it into ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs). These are like peanut butter bars. They are easy to carry and don't need to be cooked or kept cold. This means kids can get treatment for malnutrition at home.
What They Do Today
Action Against Hunger has main offices in eight countries. These are France, Germany, Spain, the United States, Canada, Italy, India, and the UK.
They focus on four main areas to fight hunger:
- Nutrition and Health: Making sure people get enough good food and stay healthy.
- Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: Helping communities get clean water and good hygiene practices.
- Food Security & Livelihoods: Helping families find ways to get food and earn money.
- Emergency Response: Giving quick help when disasters or crises happen.
Working with Restaurants
Action Against Hunger works with restaurants and food businesses. They want to raise awareness about hunger around the world. Each year, they run special campaigns. These campaigns help raise money for their programs. Two of their campaigns are "Restaurants Against Hunger" and "Love Food Give Food."
