List of MPs elected in the 1734 British general election facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This is a list about the people who were chosen to be Members of Parliament (MPs) in Great Britain back in 1734. These MPs were part of the 8th Parliament of Great Britain. They were elected to represent different areas, called constituencies, across the country.

What is an MP?

An MP stands for Member of Parliament. Think of them as representatives for different parts of the country. Their job is to speak for the people in their area and help make important decisions and laws for the whole country. In 1734, there were 558 MPs in the Parliament of Great Britain.

The 1734 Election

The election in 1734 was held between April 22 and June 6. People in 314 different areas, or constituencies, voted for their chosen MPs. Each constituency would elect one or two MPs to represent them in Parliament.

Who Were the MPs?

The MPs elected in 1734 came from different backgrounds and had different political ideas. Back then, the two main political groups were the Whigs and the Tories.

  • Whigs: Generally supported the King and a stronger Parliament. Many Whigs were wealthy landowners or merchants.
  • Tories: Often supported the power of the King and the Church of England. They were usually more traditional.

Some MPs were also called "Independent Whigs" or "Opposition Whigs," meaning they were Whigs but didn't always agree with the main Whig party.

Changes Over Time

Being an MP was a big job, and sometimes things changed during their time in Parliament. If an MP died, or if they got a new important job (like becoming a Lord, which meant they moved to a different part of Parliament), a special new election called a "by-election" would be held. This allowed the people in that area to choose a new representative.
