Chattahoochee County Jail
The Chattahoochee County Jail is an old jail building located in Cusseta, Georgia. It was built in 1902. This jail replaced an even older log jail from 1855.
Building Design and Features
The jail has a special look with Romanesque style features. You can see these in its arched windows and doors. It also has a central part that sticks out, making the building look grand. Inside, on the second floor, there were original iron cells. These cells even had unique fireplaces in the corners!
Years of Service
This jail served the county for many years. It was used from 1902 until 1975. The Chattahoochee County Jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 13, 1986.
Cusseta Industrial High School
The Cusseta Industrial High School is another important historic building in Cusseta, Georgia. It is located at 113 Sandy Road. This school was part of a special program called the Rosenwald Schools.
Rosenwald Schools Program
The Rosenwald Schools were built across the Southern United States. This happened between 1912 and 1937. They were built to provide better education for African American children during a time when schools were separated by race. The program was started by Julius Rosenwald, who was the head of Sears, Roebuck and Company. He worked with Booker T. Washington to create these schools.
