100 Landscapes of Japan (Heisei period) facts for kids
The 100 Landscapes of Japan (日本百景) is a special list of 100 amazing places to see in Japan. These places are known for their beautiful views and interesting sights. The list was first made when the current emperor was ruling the country.
The top three places on this list are the famous Mount Fuji, the stunning Shosenkyo gorge in Yamanashi Prefecture, and the wild Shiretoko area in Hokkaido.
How the List Was Made
The idea for the "100 Landscapes of Japan" started a long time ago. The first list, called the "100 Landscapes of Shōwa" (昭和百景, Shōwa hyakkei), was created in 1927. This was at the beginning of Emperor Hirohito's time as emperor.
To choose the places, a big country-wide vote was held. Two major newspapers, the Nichi Nichi Shimbun and the Mainichi Shimbun, helped with this selection process.
Later, in 2009, a new list was made. This one was called the "100 Landscapes of Heisei" (平成百景, Heisei hyakkei). The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper helped organize this update. Japan's government department for land, buildings, and travel, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, also supported it.
For the 2009 list, people suggested 300 different places. Then, over 640,000 people voted for their favorites!
