Lithuania first sent its athletes to the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. This was after Lithuania had declared its independence in 1918.

Initially, 33 athletes were planned to go. But in the end, only 13 soccer players and 2 cyclists went. The soccer team arrived in Paris just one day before their game. Lithuania's Olympic journey began on May 25, 1924. They played against Switzerland and lost 9-0. The cyclists faced technical problems and could not finish their 188 km race.

In the 1928 Summer Olympics, Lithuania sent 12 athletes. They competed in 4 different sports. These included 2 boxers, 4 cyclists, 5 track and field athletes, and one weightlifter. Juozas Vinča had the best result, finishing 5th to 7th in boxing.

Lithuania did not take part in the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This was because of money problems and disagreements within their Olympic Committee. They were also not invited to the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin by Germany. This was due to political tensions at the time. In 1940, the Soviet Union took control of Lithuania. After Second World War, Lithuanian athletes competed as part of the Soviet Union team. From 1948 to 1988, 86 Lithuanian athletes won 60 medals for the Soviet Union. Most of these (57) were in the Summer Olympics.

Since Lithuania regained its independence in 1990, it has competed in every Olympic Games.

Lithuania has never won a medal at the Winter Olympics.
