The Television Academy Hall of Fame is a special award. It honors people who have made amazing contributions to U.S. television. Think of it like a museum for the best and brightest in TV! This Hall of Fame was started by John H. Mitchell in 1984. He was the former president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. People are not added to the Hall of Fame every single year.
Honoring TV Legends
The Television Academy Hall of Fame began in 1984. The selection committee said the Hall of Fame is for people who have made "outstanding contributions." This includes work in the arts, sciences, or even managing TV companies. These contributions can be from a whole career or one big achievement. John H. Mitchell led the Hall of Fame until he passed away in 1988. After him, Edgar Scherick and then Norman Lear took over.
The First Awards
The very first ceremony was held in 1984. It celebrated the careers of seven TV legends. These included Lucille Ball, Milton Berle, and Norman Lear. The first honorees received glass statues. These statues looked like two ballet dancers. They were made by an artist named Pascal. The dancers were meant to show the hard work needed in all parts of the arts.
Since 1988, the awards have looked different. Inductees now get a crystal television screen. It sits on top of a bronze base. These new awards were designed by Romain Johnston.
Who Gets Inducted?
New members are not added every year. Usually, five or more people are announced at one time. Most of the time, individuals or pairs of people are inducted. However, there have been some exceptions. The TV show I Love Lucy was inducted in 1990. Also, the entire original cast of Saturday Night Live was honored in 2017.
In 2016, the four main TV networks received a special award. These networks were ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. They got "Hall of Fame Cornerstone" Awards.
