Purpose | To honor individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to television in the United States |
The Television Academy Hall of Fame celebrates people who have made amazing contributions to television in the United States. This special hall of fame was started by John H. Mitchell in 1984. He was the president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). People are chosen for the Hall of Fame because of their great work in TV.
What is the Hall of Fame?
The Hall of Fame awards began in 1984. The goal is to honor people who have done outstanding things in TV. This includes work in acting, writing, directing, or even managing TV companies. People can be honored for their entire career or for one very important achievement.
John H. Mitchell led the Hall of Fame until he passed away in 1988. After him, Edgar Scherick took over, and then Norman Lear became the leader.
The very first ceremony in 1984 honored seven TV legends. These included Lucille Ball, Milton Berle, and Edward R. Murrow. The first awards were glass statues of two ballet dancers. These statues showed the hard work needed in the arts. Since 1988, the awards have been crystal TV screens on a bronze base.
New members are not added every year. Usually, five or more people are inducted at one time. Most of the time, individuals or pairs are honored. However, sometimes a TV show or a group of people from a show can be inducted. For example, the show I Love Lucy was inducted in 1990. Also, the original cast of Saturday Night Live was honored in 2017.
In 2016, the four main TV networks received special "Hall of Fame Cornerstone" Awards. These networks were ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC.
One person, Bill Cosby, was inducted in 1991. However, he was later removed from the Hall of Fame.
