The First Lady of the United States is a special role in the White House. This position is usually held by the wife of the president of the United States. Sometimes, other women have taken on this role. This happens if a president is not married or if his wife cannot do the job.
Being the First Lady is not an elected job. It does not come with official duties or a salary. However, the First Lady attends many important events. She often goes with the president or represents him. Traditionally, First Ladies do not have other jobs while in this role. But some, like Eleanor Roosevelt, earned money from writing and talks, giving most to charity. Jill Biden also kept her job as an educator. The First Lady has her own team to help with her work. This team includes a social secretary, chief of staff, and press secretary. The Office of the First Lady also plans social events at the White House. It is part of the Executive Office of the President.
There have been 55 First Ladies in total. This includes 44 official First Ladies and 11 acting ones. Some presidents had more than one First Lady. This is why the numbers are different. After Donald Trump became president again on January 20, 2025, his wife, Melania Trump, became the 44th official First Lady.

Who Has Been First Lady?
There are four living former First Ladies today. They are Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Jill Biden. The most recent First Lady to pass away was Rosalynn Carter. The very first First Lady was Martha Washington.
Some presidents had more than one official First Lady. For example, John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson both remarried while they were president. Also, the wives of four presidents passed away before their husbands became president. However, the White House still considers them First Ladies. These include Martha Jefferson, Rachel Jackson, Hannah Van Buren, and Nell Arthur. One woman who was not married to a president is also an official First Lady: Harriet Lane. She was the niece of bachelor president James Buchanan.
In 2007, the United States Mint started making special gold coins. These coins feature portraits of the First Ladies. If a president served without a spouse, the coin shows a picture of Liberty. This happened for the coins of Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, and James Buchanan. However, the coin for Chester A. Arthur's First Lady shows suffragette Alice Paul.
