Portugal first joined the Olympic Games in 1912. Since then, Portuguese athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games. The Olympic Committee of Portugal (COP) was officially recognized that same year.

In 1952, Portugal also started sending athletes to the Olympic Winter Games. They have only missed two Winter Games since 1988.

As of the 2024 Summer Olympics, Portugal has won a total of 32 medals. These include 6 gold, 11 silver, and 15 bronze medals. These medals were won by 42 different athletes in nine different summer sports.
