Fiji's Olympic Journey
How Athletes Qualify
Before rugby sevens became an Olympic sport in 2016, it was hard for Fijian athletes to qualify. Rugby sevens is Fiji's national sport. Most athletes got to the Olympics through a special "wild card" invitation. This means they were invited even if they didn't meet the usual high standards.
Only two athletes qualified by reaching the required standards. Makelesi Bulikiobo qualified for the women's 400-meter sprint. This was at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Leslie Copeland qualified for the men's javelin event. He threw 80.45 meters at the 2012 Games in London.
Winter Olympic Athletes
Fiji has also sent athletes to the Winter Olympics. These athletes were invited to compete. Rusiate Rogoyawa competed in cross-country skiing. He went to the Winter Games in 1988 and 1994. Laurence Thoms competed in alpine skiing in 2002.
Famous Fijian Olympians
Two Fijian athletes have competed in five Summer Olympic Games. This is a big achievement! Windsurfer Tony Philp was one of them. He started competing in 1984 when he was only 15 years old. He went to five Olympics in a row, ending in Sydney 2000. He finished 10th twice, which is a great result.
Swimmer Carl Probert also competed in five Olympics. His first Games were in 1992 in Barcelona. His last were in Beijing 2008.
Winning Medals for Fiji
Fiji won its first ever Olympic medal in 2016. This happened at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It was a gold medal in men's rugby sevens. The team celebrated by singing a victory song. This song became very popular online. Fiji even made the day a national holiday to celebrate their win!
At the 2020 Olympics, the men's team won gold again. They successfully defended their title. The women's team also did very well. They won a bronze medal. In the 2024 Olympics, the men's team won a silver medal.
