The Grammy Award for Best Children's Music Album is a special honor given out at the Grammy Awards. The Grammy Awards started in 1958 and were first called the Gramophone Awards. Each year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the United States gives these awards. They celebrate amazing artistic work and excellent recordings in the music world. This award specifically recognizes great music and performances made for kids.
History of the Award
The award for Best Children's Album is given to artists who create high-quality recordings for young people. Over the years, the name of this award has changed a few times:
- From 1959 to 1960, it was called Best Recording for Children.
- In 1961, it changed to Best Album Created for Children.
- From 1962 to 1968, it went back to Best Recording for Children.
- No award was given in this category in 1969.
- From 1970 to 1991, it was again Best Recording for Children.
- In 1992 and 1993, it became Best Album for Children.
- From 1994 to 2011, the award was split into two parts: Best Musical Album for Children and Best Spoken Word Album for Children.
- From 2012 to 2019, these two categories were combined again. The award was then known as Best Children's Album. This was similar to how it was before 1994, but with a slightly different name.
- In 2020, spoken-word children's albums moved to a different category. The award was renamed Best Children's Music Album.
The Recording Academy decided to combine some categories in 2012. They wanted to have fewer award categories overall. They felt it made sense to have one award for all types of children's recordings, just like it was from 1958 to 1993.
