Kazakhstan first joined the Olympic Games as an independent country in 1994. Since then, Kazakh athletes have competed in every Olympic Games. Before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, athletes from Kazakhstan were part of the Soviet Union's Olympic team. They also competed with the Unified Team in 1992.

The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan was formed in 1990. It was officially recognized in 1993. This committee helps organize and support Kazakh athletes for the Olympics.

Winter Olympics Medals

Notable Kazakh Medalists

Many athletes from Kazakhstan have made history at the Olympic Games. Here are some of their achievements:

  • Vladimir Smirnov is a famous cross-country skier. He won Kazakhstan's first Winter Olympic gold medal in 1994. He also earned two silver medals in the same games.
  • Olga Shishigina won a gold medal in athletics (100m hurdles) at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics.
  • Alexander Vinokourov is a cyclist who won a gold medal in the men's road race at the 2012 London Summer Olympics. He also won a silver medal in 2000.
  • Olga Rypakova is an athlete who won a gold medal in the women's triple jump at the 2012 London Summer Olympics. She also has a silver and a bronze medal from other games.
  • Dmitriy Balandin won a gold medal in swimming (men's 200m breaststroke) at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. This was a historic win for Kazakhstan in swimming.
  • Yeldos Smetov is a judoka who won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. He also has a silver and a bronze medal from previous games.
