Plaque in Maidstone, Kent, remembering people who were executed nearby.

During the 1500s and early 1600s in England, many Protestants were executed because of their religious beliefs. This happened under kings and queens like Henry VIII (1509–1547) and Mary I (1553–1558). A famous writer named John Foxe wrote about these events in his book, Foxe's Book of Martyrs. He described "great persecutions & horrible troubles" and the suffering of these "martyrs".

In England and Wales, people were punished under laws against Catholic teachings. During Queen Mary I's five-year reign, at least 280 people were burned at the stake.

Why were Protestants punished?

The English Reformation and new beliefs

The English Reformation was a big change in England. It stopped the Catholic Church from being in charge and made the king the head of the English Church. Many church buildings, like monasteries, were also closed down.

A key year was 1547 when Edward VI became king. He was England's first Protestant ruler and brought in new Protestant ideas. Edward died at age 15 in 1553. After him, his half-sister, Mary I, who was Catholic, became queen.

Queen Mary I and the return to Catholicism

When Queen Mary I took the throne in 1553, she wanted to bring England back to the Catholic Church. She cancelled all the religious laws that King Edward VI had made. This meant Protestants had a difficult choice:

  • Leave England and go into exile.
  • Change their beliefs and become Catholic.
  • Face punishment.

Many Protestants chose to leave, but hundreds who disagreed with the new Catholic rules were executed. This led to Queen Mary I being called "Bloody Mary." It's believed that at least 287 people, including 56 women, were executed for their faith during her rule. Another 30 people died in prison.

The punishments started with important church leaders. However, Foxe's Book of Martyrs shows that many ordinary people were also executed. These included tradesmen, married men and women, and even young people.

How were trials carried out?

Even though the punishments were harsh, the trials of Protestants were official legal events. Bishops, especially Bishop Bonner, followed strict legal rules. The Queen's special council, called the Privy Council, also approved these actions.

In January 1555, Parliament brought back the old laws against heresy (beliefs that go against official church teachings). This meant England could legally punish anyone found guilty of not following the Roman Catholic faith.

The goal was to find out if someone was guilty or innocent in an open court. If a person was found guilty, they were first removed from the church (excommunicated). Then, they were handed over to the government to be executed.

The story of John Rogers

John Foxe, the writer, was one of the few churchmen who didn't believe in burning people for their beliefs. Before Queen Mary I became queen, Foxe asked a Protestant preacher named John Rogers to help a woman named Joan Bocher. She was an Anabaptist (a type of Protestant) and was sentenced to be burned in 1550.

However, Rogers refused to help. He believed that burning people for heresy was acceptable, even calling the method "sufficiently mild." Later, when Queen Mary I came to power and made England Catholic again, John Rogers strongly spoke out against her new rules. Because of this, he himself was burned as a heretic.

Remembering the martyrs

John Foxe listed 312 people who were executed for their faith or died in prison during these persecutions. There are many memorials across England to remember them. Three of the most famous are honored with a Gothic memorial in Oxford, England. These people are often called the "Marian Martyrs."

The Church of England remembers these English Saints and Martyrs of the Reformation Era with a special day on May 4th.
