A plain is a very large area of land that is mostly flat. It doesn't have many hills or mountains. Plains are often good places for farming because the land is flat and the soil is usually rich. They are also easier to build on than plateaus or mountains.

What is a Plain?

Plains are one of the main types of landforms on Earth. They are usually found at low elevations, which means they are not very high above sea level. However, some plains can be found at high elevations too, especially if they are surrounded by mountains.

How Plains are Formed

Plains can be formed in several ways. Many are created by rivers. Over thousands of years, rivers carry sediment like silt, sand, and clay from higher areas and deposit it across wide, flat valleys. This creates what are called alluvial plains.

Other plains are formed when glaciers move across the land, smoothing out the surface. Some plains are actually old sea floors that have risen up over time due to geological forces. These are called coastal plains or lacustrine plains if they were once lake beds.

Types of Plains

There are different kinds of plains, depending on how they were formed and where they are located:

  • Alluvial Plains: These are formed by rivers depositing sediment. They often have very fertile soil, making them great for farming. The Indo-Gangetic Plain in Asia is a famous example.
  • Coastal Plains: These are flat areas of land along the coast of an ocean or sea. They are usually low in elevation and can be affected by tides.
  • Glacial Plains: These plains were shaped by glaciers during ice ages. The glaciers flattened the land and left behind deposits of till and outwash.
  • Structural Plains: These are formed when large areas of the Earth's crust are uplifted or lowered without much folding or faulting. They often have horizontal layers of rock.

Why are Plains Important?

Plains are very important for human life and the environment.

Farming and Food

Because plains are flat and often have rich soil, they are ideal for agriculture. Many of the world's most important crops, like wheat, corn, and rice, are grown on plains. This makes plains crucial for feeding the global population. The Great Plains in the United States and the Pannonian Plain in Central Europe are examples of major farming regions.

Cities and Transportation

The flat land of plains makes it easy to build cities, roads, railways, and airports. This is why many large cities and transportation networks are found on plains. It's much simpler to construct buildings and infrastructure on flat ground than on hilly or mountainous terrain.

Ecosystems and Wildlife

Plains are home to many different ecosystems, including grasslands, savannas, and steppes. These areas support a wide variety of wildlife, from large grazing animals like bison and zebras to many types of birds and smaller creatures. These ecosystems play a vital role in the planet's biodiversity.
