1906 Intercalated Games

Egypt first joined the Olympic Games in 1912. Since then, Egyptian athletes have competed in most Summer Olympic events.

Egypt has sometimes chosen not to participate in the Olympics. In 1956, Egypt, along with Cambodia, Iraq, and Lebanon, boycotted the Games. This was to protest against the invasion of Egypt by Israel, the United Kingdom, and France during the Suez War. However, the horse riding events for the 1956 Games happened earlier in Stockholm, Sweden. Three Egyptian riders still competed there.

Egypt also left the 1976 Summer Olympics after three days. This was part of a larger African boycott. They protested against New Zealand's sports connections with apartheid South Africa. Apartheid was a system of racial segregation. In 1980, Egypt joined a boycott led by America. This was to protest the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.

Egypt has only participated once in the Winter Olympic Games. This was in 1984, with a single skier.

Egyptian athletes have won a total of 41 medals. Their best sport for winning medals is weightlifting.

The Egyptian Olympic Committee is the group that organizes Egypt's Olympic efforts. It was created in 1910.
