Egypt first joined the Olympic Games in 1912. Since then, Egyptian athletes have competed in most Summer Olympic Games.

There were a few times Egypt did not fully participate. In 1956, Egypt chose not to send a full team. This was due to political disagreements at the time. However, three Egyptian riders did compete in equestrian events that year. These events were held earlier in Stockholm, Sweden.

Egypt also withdrew from the 1976 Summer Olympics. This was to support a large African protest. The protest was against countries that had sports connections with South Africa, which had unfair rules. In 1980, Egypt joined another protest. This was against an international conflict in Afghanistan.

Egypt has only sent one athlete to the Winter Olympic Games. This was an alpine skier in 1984.

Overall, Egyptian athletes have won 41 medals. Olympic weightlifting is their most successful sport.

The organization in charge of Egypt's Olympic team is the Egyptian Olympic Committee. It was started in 1910.

From 1960 to 1964, Egypt and Syria competed together. They were known as the United Arab Republic. Most of the athletes during this time were from Egypt.
