Welsh peers and baronets facts for kids
This article is about Welsh peers and baronets. These are people who hold special titles like peerage (lords and ladies) or baronetcy (a hereditary knight-like title). Their titles are connected to Welsh place names or areas within the historic counties of Wales.
Welsh titles come from different times and events in history. After Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last Welsh Prince of Wales, was killed in 1282 during the Edwardian Conquest, Wales was divided into counties, much like England. Many old Welsh titles were removed. However, some Welsh lords who stayed loyal were given English titles instead.
Even though Welsh Law continued for some civil cases, King Edward I changed how land was inherited in Wales. He introduced a system where the eldest son inherited everything. This made it easier for English lords to gain control of Welsh lands.
Later, between 1535 and 1542, Wales officially became part of England through laws called the Laws in Wales Acts 1535-1542. English law was fully put into place. Both native Welsh lordships and those in the Welsh Marches (border areas) became part of the English system of peerage. Wales does not have its own separate peerage system. Instead, Welsh peers are part of the English, Great Britain, and later, the United Kingdom peerages.
Some lords, like the Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor and the Marquess of Anglesey, have their main family homes in Wales. Others, such as the Marquess of Abergavenny, live outside Wales.
